Too Bad it's not a Cheesy B-Movie...That'd Be More Fun. (Your Life's Soundtrack W/O)

The Bottom Line It's sad...my life's soundtrack is more interesting than my life itself!

Ah, I've been sucked into yet another write off! This one was too fun to resist. Most of you all probably know the concept by now...whisperscream has given us a list of scenes from a hypothetical movie about our lives, and we provide the soundtrack. Here goes mine!

Opening Credits: "Lost in the Supermarket" The Clash
I have to give Eric credit for pointing out to me that this is a "cheesy movie opener" song. I realize he didn't mean it as a compliment, but oh well. (: I love this soft, reflective new wave tune from the famous punk band. I can relate to the lyrics, and it works great as an intro to my "life story."

"I wasn't born as much as I fell out
Nobody seemed to notice me
We had a hedge back home in the suburbs
Over which I never could see"

Waking Up: "Broca's Ways" Zumpano
This indie-pop tune starts out languid and groggy, then perks up, goes back to languid and groggy, then perks up...

Average Day: "Guess Things Happen That Way" Johnny Cash
I hate to pick such a cheesy song from one of my favorite artists, but I find myself thinking flippantly "oh, well, sh*t happens" a lot during an average day, so this one fits...

"I don't like it, but I guess things happen that way...(sha do be doop, sha do be doop)..."

First Date: "Ask" The Smiths
This classic Brit-pop tune captures the passive-aggressive, coquettish playfulness of all my good first dates...

Falling In Love: "Wonderful Night" The Red Elvises
I picture this sweet, bouncy, faux tropical tune playing over a silly montage of my husband and I tramping through the bars of Ybor City in the early stages of our relationship. He he. That was fun!

Love Scene: "My True Love" Bobby Fuller
It's a sentimental 60's ballad with an otherwordly feel. I always thought this would make a great "candlelight sex scene" song.

Fight Scene: "Butcher the Song" Cursive
I wish I could've picked something like Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law" while I'm shown cartoonishly beating the crap out of someone I don't like. That would rule (: But in all honesty, the artsy emo tune "Butcher the Song," is a much more accurate soundtrack to the (non-physical) fights I've actually had in my life. Slow burning brooding and sulking, punctuated by piissy little outbursts...perfect!

Breaking Up: "Nobody's Perfect" Dios
The dreamy, bittersweet music just sounds like something slowly coming apart and unraveling; like something winding down and coming to an end. Plus, there's this line:

It's my fault I stayed so long with you

Getting Back Together: "Fixing a Hole" The Beatles
This was the hardest one to pick, because I've never been one to ride the break-up-then-get-back-together merry go round...I'm a boring person who hates drama in relationships. (: I just went with the first thing that jumped into my mind.

Secret Love: "Thirteen" Big Star
It's shy, sweet, insecure...a fragile, beautiful little ballad from the revered power-poppers.

Life's OK: "Modern Nature" Sondre Lerche
Not sure what the lyrics mean, but the jaunty, carefree music from this neo-folkie is the perfect soundtrack to a Helene Good Mood.

Mental Breakdown: "Snailhead" Throwing Muses
Kinetic, mercurial and anguished. Music to both brood and break stuff to.

Driving: "Tailspin" Los Straightjackets
A killer surf instrumental...the ultimate driving song, IMO.

Learning A Lesson: "All the Way" Robert Cray
Cray's buttery voice is warm and wise, and the music is fluid and contemplative.

Deep Thought: "Cohesion" The Minutemen
A quiet, reflective classical guitar instrumental from the 80's post-punkers.

Flashback: "Fallen Angel" Poison
Yes, I'm serious. (: The perfect song to flashback to scenes of me and my little pseudo-metal chick friends in middle school.

Partying: "Maybelline" Chuck Berry
Had to give the nod to ol' Chuck here. If you don't know his music, shame on you, and buy his Great 28 hits compilation!

Happy Dance: "One Step Beyond" Madness
Predictably, this slot is filled with a ska tune!

Regretting: "Someday Never Comes" Creedence Clearwater Revival
Okay, so the song's lyrics about divorce don't really apply to my life at all, but the music, melody and Fogerty's voice all match my mood when I'm feeling sad and regretful.

Long Night Alone: "Halloween" The Dream Syndicate
It's very dark and trippy, with a sinister, repetitive bassline.

Death Scene: "Day is Done" Nick Drake
Because I'd want my death scene to be very dramatic. (: This is one of Drake's more morose numbers, with a heavy, brooding string arrangement.

When the day is done
Down to earth then sinks the sun
Along with everything that was lost and won
When the day is done

Closing Credits: "All My Life" Echo and the Bunnymen
Gently upbeat and bittersweet at the same time. A perfect closing number.

All my life
Revolves around
Laughter and crying
As my life turns
Round and round

Thanks for hosting this W/O whisperscream! I'm suffering from writer's block on my proper reviews, so maybe this'll get me going!
