The Bottom Line "I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell". Damn I shoulda found a spot for that one.
Let's just say it's a typical night for me. I'm sitting home alone, nowhere to go, nothing to do, no one to even talk to. Everyone I normally speak to is busy with their own lives and is either unavailable or ignoring me. Thankfully, I managed to log on here and find whisperscream's "Life Soundtrack" write-off. When I first saw this I kinda assumed that it would be a collection of songs that kinda meant a lot to you at pivotal times in your life, but instead it's just an exercise to list songs that fit a particular mood. And since I'm a man of many moods (most of them bad), who better to participate in this than me? Beats the hell out of sitting here with a dark cloud feeling sorry for myself. Anyway, here goes... Opening Credits: Survivor "Eye Of The Tiger" I guess this song makes sense because it was in the opening credits of an actual movie? Of course, now everyone knows it as the song in some retarded frappucino commercial. Waking Up: John Mayer "Clarity" A song I actually play at least once every day before I go to work. It sets my head on straight before the workday starts and I inevitably get ticked off. "By the time I recognize this moment, this moment will be gone...so I will bend the light pretending/that it somehow lingers on..." Average Day: Todd Rundgren "Bang On The Drum All Day" This was a tough one, but this is what I'm thinking 85% of the time when I'm sitting at my desk. First Date: John Mayer "My Stupid Mouth" I gotta roll with the insomniac on this one. My first dates are usually a tangled mess of tension and nerves. "I'm never speaking up again..." Falling In Love: Matchbox Twenty "If You're Gone" This song marked a very pivotal moment in the relationship that marked the very first time I said "I love you" to a significant other and as such, will always have a special place in my heart. Runner up: "And So It Goes" by Billy Joel for equally personal reasons. Love Scene: Prince "Adore" I guess I could've slotted one of a million Prince songs here, but this one takes the cake for romantic ferocity matched by an almost mystical, religious vibe. "Without you there is no sea/there is no shore/love's too weak to define how much I adore". Fight Scene: Jay-Z "99 Problems" This song makes me feel like going back to Brooklyn and getting into a fight just for the hell of it. Runner-up: "Kick In The Door" by The Notorious B.I.G. Breaking Up: George Michael "One More Try" The perfect morose ending to a relationship that once held promise. There ain't no joy for an uptown boy, indeed. Getting Back Together: Phyllis Hyman "Old Friend" A ballad that perfectly captures the unbridled joy of being back in the arms of the one that you love. Secret Love: Me'shell N'degeocello "Outside Your Door" Passionate and pensive at the same time. Life's Ok: Modest Mouse "Float On" Makes me believe that everything's gonna be OK. Sometimes... Mental Breakdown: Anthony Hamilton "I'm A Mess" When the due starts singing about his dog crying out because it knew he was suffering, that's some real talk right there. Driving: Gin Blossoms "Hey Jealousy" Just seems like the perfect driving song. Maybe 'cause it's easy to sing along with. Can you tell I've never driven a car before? Learning A Lesson: Janet Jackson "Better Days" "Sometimes life just isn't fair/So why complain, nobody cares/And I don't wanna waste nobody's time..." This may very well become my new mantra. Deep Thought: John Mayer "Wheel" A song whose merits I've discussed on several occasions. Flashback: Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth "They Reminisce Over You" The haunting soulful vibe of this song always takes me back. Party Song: Michael Jackson "Off The Wall" The ultimate bada** party song. Makes me wanna dance and sing along every time I hear it. Happy Dance: Madonna "Into The Groove" For whatever reason, this song totally reminds me of summer. Regretful: Marvin Gaye "Just To Keep You Satisfied" Quite possibly one of the most painful end-of-a-love-affair songs ever written. Long Night Alone: Luther Vandross "A House Is Not A Home" "I'm not meant...to live alone! Turn this house into a home.../When I climb the stairs/and turn the key/you'll be there/saying that you're still...in...love..." Death Scene: Dave Matthews "Gravedigger" The most morbidly morose song I've ever heard. Closing Scene: Kansas "Dust in the Wind" This seems like the perfect song to play when the end credits are rolling. And in the end, aren't we really just dust in the wind? Runner-up: "In The End" by Linkin Park. So there ya have it. Thanks to Justin for proposing this write-off and giving me something to do but sulk. All lyrics are the sole intellectual property of the people that wrote 'em. I just added 'em in because they express the meaning of the particular emotion a helluva lot better than I could've described 'em. |
