The Films Of John Carpenter

Sep 01 '04

The Bottom Line In 1978 a young filmmaker made Halloween, a film that would go on to become the blueprint for almost every slasher movie that followed.

1. HALLOWEEN (1978)
Originally titled The Babysitter Murders, Halloween was only Carpenter's fourth film but would go on to become one of the biggest horror movies ever. It tells the story of a babysitter stalked by a killer and the doctor who is in pursuit.

2. THE THING (1982)
Released at the same time as the more friendly ET, this remake of the '50's classic originally bombed at the cinema but found its audience on video. Kurt Russell leads the team who fight off a shape-shifting alien in the middle of nowhere.

3. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986)
Chinese fantasy meets western action movies as an unlikely hero tries to fight off a two thousand year old sinister magician in this FX-heavy masterpiece.

4. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981)
Now the subject of an anime movie, a comic and a computer game, this film introduced antihero Snake Plissken, who is sent into a prison city to rescue the president.

5. THE FOG (1979)
Old style horror meets the slasher genre as the ghosts of long dead sailors haunt a small fishing town. The villain's weapons, large hooks, would go on to influence the killer in I Know What You Did Last Summer.

6. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (1976)
Carpenter's urban remake of Rio Bravo sees a group of cops and criminals forced to team up when a police station becomes under siege from a gang of killers.

7. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1995)
Sam Neil's search for a missing writer leads him into the depths of insanity and the jaws of hell.

8. DARK STAR (1974)
Carpenter's 2001-spoof student film became a cult classic and not only cemented his career but was also the debut of co-writer Dan O'Bannon, who would go on to pen Alien, Total Recall and Return Of The Living Dead.

9. THEY LIVE (1988)
Ex-wrestler Roddy Piper discovers a mysterious pair of sunglasses and realizes the world is really run by aliens. Full of subliminal anti-commercialism in an age that was greed obsessed.

10. PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987)
Some truly unsettling sequences lift this The-Devil-lives horror away from the joke it could have been and into a disturbing chiller.
