East Coast Pinot Meunier, from Duck Walk VineyardsSep 03 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line This product is foul, with only a few redeeming qualities. It's one of Duck Walk's weakest efforts. Located in Southampton, New York, Duck Walk Vineyards is a winery with more than three centuries of wine- making to its credit. Formerly called the Southampton Winery, it can be found near the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, toward the east end of Long Island. Duck Walk Vineyards produces about a dozen different wines ranging from soft white wine to sweet dessert wine. One of its many products is the subject of this review. It is Duck Walk Vineyards Pinot Meunier, a burgundy wine, bottled in 2000, for those who enjoy medium to full- bodied reds. Basic Characteristics of This Wine: This wine is dark purple/reddish in color with an aroma that is dry and fruity. Swirled around in a glass, this Pinot Meunier appears to be medium in body and it releases a bouquet that is plum- like and a little alcoholic. Tasting this wine, the primary characteristics are plums, prunes, and a small amount of grape. Black currents and blackberry can also be detected in the body. But overall, the main flavors present are plums and the dryness of alcohol and most of the taste sensation is discovered in the finish. Duck Walk makes this wine with an alcohol by volume of 12.5 percent. The aftertaste left by this wine is very pronounced, with the taste of prunes dominating. Food Compatibility: When I tried this wine, food was not something I was considering. But if I had to match it with some type of cuisine, I think I would suggest either fruit salad or a pasta dish with plenty of tomatoes and tomato sauce. Most people will probably choose to drink this product by itself, as an after- dinner beverage, but it would also make a good beer to consume with certain specific foods, like those mentioned above. Final Thoughts: Duck Walk Vineyards Pinot Meunier is a wine produced in the burgundy style. It is the only vineyard in the eastern U.S. that makes this type of wine, and a few sips should make it pretty obvious why this wine is not more widely produced or more widely accepted. I dont drink many wines, and when I do, I usually reach for a glass of white wine. But on this unusual occasion, I felt the desire for the taste of red and I remembered that a friend had given me a bottle several months ago. I decided it was time to pop the cork and give this wine a try. This product emphasizes the flavor of plums and black currants, but it doesnt taste as good as some of the better plum wines I have tried in the past. This wine is dry and vinegary, with a taste that made me cringe a little as I tried to consume. Determined to make it taste better, I decided that perhaps a colder temperature would work (even though reds are normally served at room temperature, I like mine a little bit chilled) so I chilled for a short time in the refrigerator, dropping the temperature to about 55 degrees. But it didnt really do much for the taste. I still found the overall flavor profile to be rather foul, with a most unpleasant aftertaste of bad prunes. Duck Walk sells this product for about $9.95 per 750 ml bottle. It is easy to find in the greater Long Island area, but not very easy to find if you live a few states away. I have noticed, from surfing the internet, that many on- line wine retailers are selling this product for between $5.99 and $7.99- a pretty good discount from the original price which speaks volumes about this wines quality. 2000 is a non- vintage year for this product, and Im not sure if it has even had a vintage year in recent times. Overall, this is a below average wine that will appeal only to those who crave the burgundy wine style and can find something good to say about most any burgundy wine product that comes their way. Duck Walk makes some noteworthy products and many of them have received recognition and awards at wine festivals and from critics. But this burgundy wine is most definitely not one that deserves any type of award. I didnt like this much at all, and after trying to drink a few glasses, I retired the remaining wine to the bottom of my garbage disposal drain. Im going to rate this wine 1.5 stars out of 5. Its a tough product to take a liking to, with a harsh finish and bad aftertaste of prunes. Avoid it, if you can. |
