Dragonfire's Favorite Movies of 2003Sep 05 '04 (Updated Feb 27 '10) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These are my favorites of the movies I've seen that were made in 2003. Some may not be the best, but I enjoyed them. I’ve been a member of Epinions for just over three years now and I decided it was time I did a list in some area of movies. I have been thinking on this for a while, and have ideas for a few others as well. I decided to start off with my favorite movies from 2003. I did not see all of the movies that were released in 2003. I still haven’t seen a few that many consider some of the best of the year. I will get around to seeing some of those sometime. This list includes my favorites from the ones I did see, as of September 5, 2004. These movies were all released in 2003, though I wasn’t able to see a few of them until 2004. I do think that a few of these movies truly were the best of the year. The other movies were ones that I really enjoyed. I do know that some of these movies weren’t considered too good by many when they came out, but I still enjoyed them. This list is in no particular order. It was hard enough for me to narrow it down without putting them in order. Looney Tunes: Back in Action - I know this movie was far from one of the best of the year, but I really liked it. I have loved Loony Tunes cartoons since I was a child. I have a collection of many different Looney Tunes items. I was very happy to see a new movie featuring these characters. The movie was a bit silly, but very entertaining. It featured a combination of real people and animated characters. Basically, after getting fired, Daffy and a security guard were looking for a special diamond. Bugs and an executive from Warner Brothers ended up involved in the search as well. Many Looney Tunes characters turned up in the movie, though some didn’t get very much to do. The actors in the movie include Brendan Fraser, Jenna Elfman, and Steve Martin. Secondhand Lions - Walter, a young teenager, was made to spend the summer with his two great uncles, Garth and Hub. His mother told him how there were rumors that the men had millions hidden somewhere on their farm. She wanted Walter to find the money. Garth and Hub didn’t like visitors and used shotguns to scare off salesmen. They were convinced to let Walter stay with them. The three had to adjust to each other, but they managed to get along. Walter came to care for his uncles, and tried to get them to change certain things. Stories about the brothers and their adventures were shared. I really liked this movie and found it to be very entertaining. Haley Joel Osment was very good as Walter. Michael Caine and Robert Duvall were also very good as Garth and Hub. Freaky Friday - Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan play Tess and Anna, a mother and daughter that switch bodies. It was very entertaining and funny. Each had to adjust and figure out how to deal with life as the other person. Tess was a single mother who was getting married again. Anna was still dealing with some feelings she had about her mother getting remarried, which added to the troubles after she and her mother switched bodies. This movie was a remake. I never saw the original movie. The Italian Job - After getting double crossed, a group of thieves decide to go after the man that betrayed them. They made elaborate plans to steal a certain object. Stella got involved in the plan because of what had happened to her dad on the original job. She hadn’t been happy that her father was a criminal. There were some chases in the movie, including one featuring Mini Coopers. There was enough going on through the movie to keep it interesting. The cast included Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Seth Green, Donald Sutherland, and Edward Norton. I have liked Norton in several other movies, but his performance wasn’t as good in this movie. Brother Bear - In this animated movie, a young man blamed a bear for his brother’s death. After killing the bear, the man is transformed into a bear by the spirits. He then had to go on a journey to find the spirits to be changed back into a man. Along his way, he encountered two moose and a young bear cub. I really enjoyed this movie. My favorite characters were Rutt and Tuke, the two moose. I loved them. They were so silly and made me laugh every time I saw them. I even went out and got a stuffed version of each moose. Some of the voices for the characters were provided by Joaquin Phoenix, D.B. Sweeney, Michael Clark Duncan, Rick Moranis, and Dave Thomas. X2: X-Men United - This is the second movie to feature characters from the X-Men comic books. Most of the characters returned from the first movie. There were a few new characters as well, including Nightcrawler, a mutant that could teleport. He was used in a plot to try to kill the President, which caused hatred for mutants to grow. Mutants who had been enemies ended up working together to stop a man who wanted to wipe out all mutants. The movie had a lot of action, but there was also development for some of the characters. There was also some hinting at what will be coming in the third X-Men movie. This is one of the best movies that is based on comic books. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - This movie was based on a ride at Disneyland and ended up being one of the biggest movies of 2003. I saw it twice in the theater and now have the DVD. The movie is about a group of cursed pirates who kidnap a young woman in an attempt to end the curse. A young man she had known for years decided to join with a pirate captain to go after her. Captain Jack Sparrow stumbled around like he was drunk all the time and had some bad luck. He was more cunning than some gave him credit for. Johnny Depp was brilliant as Jack and received a well deserved Oscar nomination for the part. He was the best part of the movie. Other members of the cast included Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush. Finding Nemo - In this computer-animated movie, a young fish wanted more freedom from his over protective father and found himself in an aquarium in a dentist’s office. His father traveled across the ocean to try and rescue him with the help of a fish that had a short term memory problem. Father and son both had several adventures. I loved this movie. The plot wasn’t the most original, but it was entertaining. The animation was beautiful and the voices matched the characters perfectly. This is a very good family movie. Some of the voices were provided by Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneris, Willem Dafoe, Brad Garrett, and Geoffrey Rush. Mystic River - Three childhood friends were reunited by murder. This movie was full of wonderful performances. Sean Penn won the Oscar for his portrayal of Jimmy, the father of the murdered girl. He was very good in the part and I can see why he won the award. Tim Robbins also won an Oscar for his performance as a man still dealing with something horrible that happened to him as a child. Kevin Bacon was very good in the movie. I did like most of this movie, but I was very disappointed with the ending. It turned predictable and I wasn’t happy with what happened. Even though I didn’t like the ending, I do still think it was one of the best movies of the year, and I did like the rest of the movie. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - The final movie in the epic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy showed Frodo and Sam getting ever closer to Mount Doom with the ring. Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas and many men were preparing to go into battle against the forces of Sauron in Gondor. Everything about the movie was wonderful. The effects were great without being over bearing. I really enjoyed this movie. It was my favorite movie of 2003. I do think it was the best movie of the year. There were other movies that came out in 2003 that I did enjoy, though not as much as the ones I just discussed. Runaway Jury ~ The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - yes I know, but I still enjoyed it. ~ Peter Pan ~ Out of Time ~ Intolerable Cruelty ~ Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas ~ I also wanted to mention two other movies, Cold Mountain and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World . I thought that these movies were well made. The acting, especially in Cold Mountain, was wonderful. I just didn’t enjoy these movies as much as the others. Cold Mountain was all right, but it was basically a war movie, and I just don’t like war movies. Both were good movies, but I was disappointed by both of them, which is why I didn’t include them in my list. These were my favorites of 2003. Now that I’ve finished this list, I will be doing more thinking on some other lists to put together some day.
