Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
The second season of Sex and The City picks up right at the end of the first season, giving us a quick recap, even without being overly obvious, and lead character Carrie Bradshaw finds her friends insistent that she get back out on the dating scene. The episode, Take Me Out to The Ballgame sets the tone for a season full of surprises, revelation about the main characters, and of course a lot of sex and dating in the bustling city of Manhattan. Maybe I am a little bias because of the baseball theme that is used heavily in the first episode, but I think it really steer the show in the direction that it would be going. After being a surprise hit in its first season, Sex and the City came back with 18 episodes that get split between 3 discs in this set, and really ended up cementing itself as one of the hit comedies of the year. Not only that, but it really helped increase subscriptions to its home network; HBO.
Sex and The City is of course the story of 4 women amidst the stressful dating scene within New York City. The primary star, and narrator to the show, is Sarah Jessica Parker in the role of Carrie Bradshaw. Carrie writes a sex column for a major New York newspaper, and through it tells the story of sex and dating within the city. Of course she draws from personal experience to find article topics, and through the article she also learns life lessons. Her three friends are played by Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes. All four are quite intelligent women, who are strong in the professional world, but have had issues with finding the perfect guy along the way. It of course leads to a lot of dating and talk of sex between the friends, as they all head down different roads trying to find "Mr. Right."
Now the second season of the show was able to take a few more risks, and with the success of the first season, it was quite evident that the writing moved up a notch, and each of the characters took hold with their intermixed personalities of the writing and the actress. Their are some continued storylines from season 1, as we find out more about the relationship between Carrie and Mr. Big (Chris North) and friends are finally introduced to several current boyfriends. Fans also get to enjoy some funny storylines as Samantha dates everyone from a guy she finds "too small" to a much older man to a couple that wants to invite her over for a threesome. In other storylines, Miranda finds out what its like to date a co-worker, Charlotte starts dating a much younger man, and Miranda also runs into an ex-boyfriend on the street, giving her in-sight into Carrie's plight with "Big".
I think that Season Two of Sex and The City really stood out from the first one in that it didn't have to rely on pleasing HBO, but could cater more to its fans and create storylines that people everywhere were interested in watching. The main story arc of the season is Carrie and her off-again on-again romance with Mr. Big, but it continues in the background at times, not overshadowing the plot-lines designed to make the three supporting actresses shine. The whole cast seemed to gel even more with this season, and succeeded with a whole new batch of one-liners, relationship pitfalls, and of course deals with more formally taboo topics about sex. The DVD set presents the 18 episodes on 3 discs, with a couple of extras that include biographies of all the main characters and the actors/actresses playing their parts. I must say that I am not a fan of the flimsy box they put the set in, but the season has so many positives that this is just a small issue. If you liked Season 1 of Sex and the City, you will love Season 2, as the characters start to really develop and present a well rounded show about Sex in New York City.
