Freinsheimer Rosenbühl Riesling Kabinett - Pfalz, QmP

Sep 08 '04

The Bottom Line A good, light dry Riesling well suited for warm weather entertaining.

My hot-weather wine selection today is a refreshing gulper from Germany:

Freinsheimer Rosenbühl Riesling Kabinett - Pfalz, QmP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(non-Vintage dated, in a gift bottle)

This is a light 10% alcohol by volume white wine, produced using 100% Riesling grapes. The fruit was grown in the Pfalz region, the largest and warmest wine producing region in Germany, located between the Rheinhessen growing region (the largest region in physical size) and the country of France. Pfalz is the home of the world's largest annual wine festival--with an estimated consumption of about 400,000 liters of wine. About 25% of this region's wine production is exported, with Great Britain being the largest foreign buyer.

Freinsheim -- An old town on Pfalz's famous "Weinstrasse" (The German wine road). The ancient Romans are credited for developing viticulture in this area. The main grape varieties grown here are Riesling and Müller-Thurgau.

Rosenbühl - Name of vineyard.

Riesling Kabinett - Kabinett is the term used for the driest style of German Riesling wine. Usually, a Kabinett wine is fairly low in alcohol (typically 7 to 9 percent by volume).

Although this is the driest of the types of Riesling wines produced, most will find that this wine is still semi-dry (slightly sweet) and fruity in taste.

QmP - Qualitätswein mit Pradikät are wines that are the product of exceptional growing years and are produced using no added sugars. Wines with this designation and quality grade are usually priced higher than other German wines.

Now, as for the wine...

Alcohol: 10.0% by volume. Light/moderate.

Appearance: Pale straw-straw color, free of suspended materials or sediment.

Aroma: Lemon-Apple/pineapple fruit with a slightly grassy tone and accents of blanched almond, stone (mineral), and warm tar.

Flavor: Dry apple core, green melon and stone fruit pits. Crisp; proper measure of acidity to compliment organically complex flavors of stone fruit, apple, and white root.

Finish: Lingering finish with a lightly sweet fruit that is braced by a lemon/citrus flavor, yielding to stone and root flavors in the end. Interesting & clean.

Overall: A good, light dry Riesling well suited for warm weather entertaining. A fine apéritif wine. Drink it young. I'd consider pairing with a breaded Pork Schnitzel (Schweine Schnitzel, Wiener art) served with a side of apple dumplings lightly touched with sugar and cinnamon.

Price and Availability: I received this wine as a gift. If you buy from the importer's website, this wine is priced at $24.36 per bottle--which is fairly expensive. Germany has had some tremendous harvests in recent years, but $25 for this Riesling is extravagant. It is not difficult to find a good dry Riesling selling for less than 5 Euros ($6) in Germany.
