Some children CAN be trained at an early age. It's like those that walk at nine months compared to those who don't walk until they are a year old. I'm not certain when we will work with Korah, I'll just have to watch for the signs.
Thanks for reading rating and commenting.

And most children like those training pants. My child use to say "but I don't NEED a diaper" and cry when I would attempt to use them. Even when I explaned that they were not diapers, he still insisted that he didn't need it.
Thanks for rrc!

Too Funny... (Reply to this comment)

My one piece of advice... If you can reasonably manage it, train your child before 2 1/2 when the true "terrible 2's" set in. My child is an incredibly strong-willed kid and when he hit that age, everything became a battle. I think if he hadn't been almost entirely potty-trained by then, that would have come into play as well and made everything more difficult.
Otherwise, my mother's favorite saying when I got discouraged... "Don't worry. He's not going to go off to college in diapers."

Cute title, LOL. Brought back memories.
My teen boys just started school. They're in 11th and 10th. They potty trained easily around 2.5 years for the oldest and almost 2 years old for the youngest. God blessed me with 2 boys who from the first night that they slept through the night with no diaper, have not wet the bed. No accidents, nothing. Other than that my almost 8 year old nephew is the only other child I was around, ALOT. When he was a lil smart brat he'd stay at our house and we had the pleasure of hearing that phrase. I believe he was fully trained by 2 years.
Take care and have a great and less rainy weekend.

Memories (Reply to this comment)

You have certainly brought back memories my oldest son was so hard to train I thought I would have to pack diapers in his college suitcase. But he decided one day that he was going to do it, he did it and never ever went in his pants again. In fact when I tried to put training pants on him he got really offended and cried, "I don't need them" I remember saying through tears, and he didn't. My daughter was pretty easy to train but had occasional accidents. Now with the baby I have all that to look forward to again. Thanks for the delighful read.

hi again April.
I didn't mean that to come across wrong. I appreciate you supplying that information as well as the links. I think you were right about some things. I meant my last comment in a good way. Not a negative type grumpy way.
I'm also glad that you added that last part in your latest comment. It makes perfect sense why the experts say to 'wait' until 2 or later now. Remember, I still have one that is in diapers so I will keep that information in mind when it comes to toilet training.

I certainly wasn't commenting on your abilities as a parent!! If you have five and the oldest is 13, you are definitely doing something right:)
I just wanted to point out that the new studies are showing that children who start later are done quicker. Every child is on their own time line and the days of mandatory cut-offs should be forgotten; we, as parents, should support each other regardless of at what age a child should be trained.
I can say that without a doubt, these kids will always amaze us no matter what we do...my middle child never once wore a pull-up to bed but my oldest did until he was 4...my 33 month old girl has no interest whatsoever. How they all ended up in my life being so different amazes me daily!

April

I think that if a child shows interest before he/she is two, then why shouldn't you encourage that. However, if the child runs from the toilet screaming and shouting, then that's the clue to back off.

Thanks for the rrc!

After attempting to pressure my first born into training, I learned my lesson. But I have to state that what harm is there in letting a child know what's going on and giving him or her to opportunity to use the potty, especially since they are constantly following you in the bathroom anyway *L*

Actually, My youngest, after he understood the concept, wanted to be trained. Although he didn't understand the word 'trained' behind 'aim for the hole buddy', he still was extremely happy when we did reward him with the opportunity to use the drain. *shrug* but as the saying goes, each to their own and we should all respect the parent since the parent knows their child best.
Best wishes
Thanks for rrc!!

You've given...... (Reply to this comment)

....some great helpful hints. I think I disagree a bit with your timeline, but you've used great methods for training.
When my kids were small, potty training was done early...you were a bad mother if you didn't get them (or yourself) trained by the time they were 2 or 2 1/2. My third child taught me that little ones have their own minds and will train they are ready...and not a moment before.
Working with kids now, I think that training shouldn't even begin until at least 2 1/2....and for a lot of kids waiting until over 3 is the best idea. I do have one little girl that trained at 2 without a problem, but I think she is more the exception than the rule.
This was great to read...you are a very dedicated mom and I really respect that. Thanks for the hints too....Make it a great day....kath

My experiences (Reply to this comment)
by thriftymommy
have been mixed. My oldest has ADD and is developmentally delayed. He was completely out of diapers/pull-ups by age 3 1/2; dry through the night by age 4.
My second child was completely out of pull-ups before his 3rd birthday.
My daughter is now 33 months and just plain not ready (even though everybody and their mother told me girls are the easiest). I have tried everything ever suggested with no results:-(
After finishing my final child development course for my Master's in Social Work, I found something interesting out: kids work on their schedule and not ours. Period. End of story.
Hundreds of Professional studies have been done by everyone from the APA to the AMA have discovered there is no time limit for potty training. Most children will not enter Kindergarten wearing a diaper unless there are other factors (developmentally delayed, physically/mentally disabled to name a few).
Nice essay; but, even with all of your personal experiences, I must disagree completely with your analysis. It is the parent who wants to potty train their child; the child could care less.
Peace,
April

Re: Still laughing! (Reply to this comment)

That's a good question. I should have mentioned that! I did try the little potty chair with child number 1 but with number 2 & 3 I did not use them. However with child number 4, he used one just briefly. And it was only because we kept one nearby after he was trained for 'immediate' relief, if you know what I mean.
Thanks for RRC!!

Still laughing! (Reply to this comment)
by Mimi369
Hi there,
I haven't laughed this hard in a very long time!
Thanks for bringing back the fond memories of what fun potty-training was like. My son was almost three before he was fully trained and that was with the help of his pre-school teachers and my mother (his baby-sitter and grandma).
I was curious, though, if you actually used those removable potty rings that fit over the toilet seat or if you used the little "personalized" potty chairs for any of your crew while training?
I had very little luck with the little chairs, (wasted a lot of cash on them).
Just thought I would ask before dropping my VH on this review.
