| funkedup's Full Review: Samsung SCH 8500 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
I got this phone as a birthday present in the beginning of the summer from my girlfriend. I think it might of been a way for her to see where I was at all times. Well, if that is the case, at least I got a great cell phone out of it. The Samsung SCH - 8500 is hands down the best cell phone that I have ever seen.
The first thing you notice about this phone is its size. It is one small phone. The days of cell phones being rediculously big are indeed over. The phone is very small and very sleek looking. Simply put, it looks very cool. I am a shallow person when it comes to my possessions, I admit it. I must have everything looking cool. That is one of the reasons I love this phone. If I pull it out to make a call and someone says "Cool phone," I turn to them and say "I know".
Not only is it cool looking, it is also very durable. I have dropped the phone repeatedly and nothing has yet to happen to it. I have even left it at a restaurant, twice! Still, it is in perfect condition. It is also dual band (meaning both digital and analog signals). This way, you are almost always guaranteed a signal. Keep in mind though, you get charged for calls made in analog roam. But it is a nice feature in case there was ever an emergency.
The buttons are nice and big and easy to use. The screen is also very large. It has an indiglo light that goes on for a few seconds when you open it. The menus are a cinch to flip through. They make it so easy to program in names and numbers. All the selections are greatly visible from the screen as well.
One of my favorite features is the voice dialing. You can program in numbers and pull up the numbers by saying the person's name. For instance, when I want to call my girlfriend, I hit the TALK button and I say Sally. Suddenly the phone starts dialing and next thing I know, Sally is on the phone. When you program in a number for the voice option, you simply record your voice command when the phone asks you to. It is a very advanced machine. You can save up to 20 of these voice command numbers.
The phone is also web enabled. This is an additional charge from Sprint. This can be handy if you want to check your e-mail on the go. I personally do not use this option. Sure, the web feature is kind of cool. But the screen is so tiny and all it can display is very basic text. I don’ t think it is worth the extra money myself. But if you have the money and would like to utilize it, you should be able to find some good things to do with it. My deal had the web access free for the first three months. I used it a couple of time to get directions, so it can be very useful.
There are lots of features on the phone, there is a nice calendar option, there is an organizer, there is a calculator. There are tons of things. You can also store hundreds of numbers too. You will never have to memorize another number again thanks to this phone. You will also be able to retrieve the number with ease.
Another important feature is the long battery life of this phone. It can go a couple of days without needing to be charged. That’s really good!
The only problem I have with the phone is with the Sprint Service. I know it is not so great in New England, but it might be better in other parts of the country. There are many areas of New England with no Sprint coverage. Also, the service will drop in signal lots of times in the middle of a call. This is not because of the phone though, just because of the service. That is why I am not penalizing the phone for this.
So, if you are in the market for a digital phone that is very small but is loaded with options, then this is the phone for you.
