Whisperscream's Write Off Entry: Soundtrack to my Life

The Bottom Line blah

Here's my entry in Whisperscream's Writeoff; what a great idea this was:

Opening Credits: Something heroic, I think. How about "Gonna Fly Now (Theme from Rocky)" by DeEtta Little? I just found out that's who sings it.

Waking Up: That's usually a fuzzy event that takes a long time; maybe the Beatles' "Revolution #9" would be good.

Average Day: "Tush" by ZZ Top.

First Date: I like to establish right away if there's any kind of future to the thing, so let's say Iggy Pop's "Five Foot One." Iggy's important. I don't think I could be with anyone who didn't like or at least respect Iggy.

Falling In Love: "Love in Outer Space" by Sun Ra.

Love Scene: Barry White. Just about anything the man did would be good. "Love Seranade" if I have to pick one.

Fight Scene: Is this a love fight or a fist fight? If the first, X's "Your Phone's Off the Hook (but You're Not)"; the latter would be something the Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

Breaking Up: "I Hate You" by the Monks

Getting Back Together: I think it's pretty stupid to break up with someone and then get back together with them; what's that about? Not that it's never happened, of course. Maybe the MC5's "Over and Over" to celebrate the pointlessness.

Secret Love: "Back Door Man" by Howlin' Wolf

Life's OK: Theme from "The Smurfs."

Mental Breakdown: The Circle Jerks' (or is it Black Flag? It's Keith Morris sings it) "Nervous Breakdown"

Driving: Depends where we're going. Stockhausen is good in flat grasslands, Calexico is good in the desert. The Ramones and the Stooges are good for the city.

Learning A Lesson: "History Lesson, Part Two" by the minutemen or "Fight Test" by the Flaming Lips. Depends on what the lesson is.

Deep Thought: "Light," Ash Ra Temel & Timothy Leary.

Flashback: Something truly psychedelic, no? How about "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic, or maybe the Butthole Surfers "Cherub the Angel."

Partying: Some kind of frat rock, I guess. "Woolly Bully" by Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs.

Happy Dance: "Flashlight" by Parliament. You can't help but dance when that comes on.

Regretting: Lucinda Williams' "Minneapolis." Address the topic straightforwardly. Neil Young's cover of Don Williams' "Oh, Lonesome Me" is good, as is around 73% of Hank, Sr.'s songbook.

Long Night Alone: Well, I need something that's long and deep to occupy my time. John Coltrane's "Ascencion."

Death Scene: The sound of a bell tower marking midnight. Final, but not operatic.

Closing Credits: Groucho Marx singing "Hello, I Must Be Going."
