When in Brazil drink Bohemia. You'll thank me for that tidbit of good advice...

Totally agree with comments regarding drinking Bohemia when in Brazil. The tragedy is that the beer they export to Europe is Bramah and you might as well drink any euro-fizz. Stick to Bohemia.

Never been to Brazil, but that's what my wife said about beer there!

Nice read though I have never heard of most of them!

I have lived in Rio for 15 months
Here are my observations regarding beer.

First off Brazilians like their beer light for 2 reasons. It is hot here. Light beer is more refreshing. They serve it quite cold. The only time you here a carioca (Rio person) complain to a waiter is when the bre is warm. Secondly, Brazilians drink a lot of beer.

There are 4 wqys to consume beer here.

I will strt with the cheapest.

Botecos generally serve cold beer from 800 ml bottles. These are 2 way bottles. The most popular brands are Skol, Antartica, Bohemia and Brahma. My fave is Bohemia. amd The premiam Antartica called original. The big bottles are served in an insulating camizinha (condom) This keeps it nice and cold. Price runs between $1.25-1.75 US

@nd Cheapest- Cans. Cans are pricier than bottles here. Very weird. Perhaps because they chill quicker. Brands are the same as the big bottles. add one local Rio fave, Itaipava. Price is 1 us at the beack to 50 cents at the market warm.

Chopp - Pronounced shop-ee. Chopp is draft beer. ! difference between USA draft and Chopp is that Chopp is un-pasteurized. Choppe should be consumed within 12 days of birth. In Rio the most popular mark is Brahma. The procurement is important. The same brand can be good in one place and suck in another. My fave Chopp bar has the beer running through 300 feet of copper tubing that runs through compacted crushed ice. Really quite good. Generally served in A tall tulipa glass. Price runs between $1.20-1.50 US for a 300ml glass. Real Cariocas get a Garotinho (small beer). Less time for it to heat up.

Longneck - Usually served in Higher end places. Priced $2-3 US. Funny thing is it is as cheap as cans in the market. Same brands adding 2 un mentioned above. Cerpa a popular beer from the Northeast. Very good. Bit more euro. Perhaps because the dutch had a presence there. The other is new called Mullata. Good amber ale.

So thats my rundown on beer in Brasil.

Good Brazilian beers (Reply to this comment)

Having lived in Brasil for the past five years and having sampled over one hundred local beers, I can see that Mark has missed all of the best Brasilian brands (Baden Baden, Eisenbahn, Schmitt's, Emmery, Backer, Bruges, etc.)

Tulipa Chopp is the bar's house draft in a tulip shaped glass - nothing more. I can't understand how this altered the taste of Brahma or whatever so dramatically.

Most Brasilian dark beers are the brewer's regular lager with caramel syrup added. It is now even possible to buy the caramel syrup on its own to darken your beer to your own taste!

Mark - it's time to come back and try all the good beers that you missed! I have to agree with you about the Bohemia Weiss, though.

Reads like you covered the entire market in Brazil. Did you have any other entertainments to pursue while in country?! I am amused by the Bavarian names used in the beer brands ("Baden-Baden," "Bavaria," and, to a lesser degree, "Kaiser").
