This past year, I decided to venture into working for a few of my areas summer residents on my days off from my regular job. Not that I wouldnt be just as delighted to paint a wall or clean a home for a local resident... the only trouble with working for someone who is, like me, a native inhabitant of these mountains where I grew up, is that we hillbilly mountain people have that determined scotch Irish blood running through our veins.
This streak of Irishness seems to predestine our fate when it comes to things like painting walls, mending fences and any other basic home repair or renovation. Independent by nature and nearly as self-reliant as the wolf, Appalachian Mountain natives have the tendency to do it themself when they want a wall painted. Thats just the way it is and I dont expect this autonomous nature to change. This might seem like a stereotypical view of my ancestors (and myself), but I can easily attribute these truths to the family I grew up with. We don't hire people to do what we can do ourselves. Thats just the way it is.
Born Fighting: How the Scotch-Irish Shaped America by James Webb is only one of the many writings providing insight into the people I can assure you are more likely to paint that wall themself than to hire me to do it. :) According to most of those writings, the Scotch Irish are born independent, suspicious of authority and government and believe that leaders should earn respect. Some might say we're stubborn. I like to use the word determined.
Either way, I decided I needed business cards. Yet, I didnt want to spend a lot of money on cards that I might, or might not, find useful. Vista Print advertises heavily on the internet, claiming to provide FREE business cards. As someone who has become wary of the word FREE in many instances, I didnt have high expectations for coming away from my first encounter with this company without making some sort of purchase.
Upon surfing through the range of designs and values displayed on the Vista Print pages I began to let my guard down. This site seemed to be the real deal and I decided to go on and create my business card from the variety of Free card designs. I chose my colors, design and added the text to the card designer, watching the results of my creation from the display window. This ability to see what youre getting as you type in your information was definitely a plus for me. Visualizing the outcome, I continued for a few moments with much more enthusiasm, to try various fonts, colors, sizes and designs. Even the choices available for free cards seemed endless to someone who enjoys playing with words and colors.
Finally, after spending some time on my cards outline and being satisfied with the results, I moved on to checkout and found that there is a small charge for the shipping. I wasnt too disappointed, though, as the shipping charges were very small. $5.45 for the slowest shipping of 250 business cards, my choice since I didnt mind waiting for the cards to arrive and, too, wanted to pay the least amount for business cards that I wasnt yet familiar with.
I was delighted to find that the cards arrived in my mailbox at a surprising speed. Within two weeks I held my first set of 250 business cards and I was pleasantly impressed by the look and feel of the cards. Not only were these cards free. They were very professional, with vivid colors displayed on quality paper, and they were just as nice as any Id accepted from many of the more prominent businesses Id dealt with.
Over the summer, I was pleasantly aware of how many times I passed a card to someone in need of a painter. Too, giving a business card to someone who needs your phone number for whatever reason is easier than searching for pen and paper. Too, I did enjoy a few successful ventures in painting for summer residents. More importantly, I believe, is that I had the pleasure of meeting some very kind and caring people who I wouldnt have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.
Vista Print has clearly changed my outlook on FREE. The company advertises 250 Free Business Cards and they provide even more than a simple business card. With their online design tool and assortment of designs, they give visitors the chance to take a chance... even if someone, like myself, doesnt want to invest too much in the possibility of a small business, they still can take a chance on the venture with business cards that really are FREE.
Yes, Im impressed. I love these cards. Theyre even better than I expected them to be when I ordered my cards and I encourage anyone interested in a real value to visit Vista Print for business cards and other business related paraphernalia. This site is a true treasure trove of tempting business tools. Even if youre someone who doesnt like risky ventures, take a chance on this one. I honestly believe youll become, as I have, a devout concubine to Vista Print (www.vistaprint.com).
