Bosch Aquastar 250SX Tankless water Fitness Program

Written: Dec 04 '07 (Updated Dec 04 '07)
Pros:You get in great shape with daily runs to the heater's reset Button.
Cons:The kids don't like running to the basement to reset the heater at bath time.
The Bottom Line: find another maker with a better handle of the technology on this type of product.

We saw the Bosch 125 SX tankless water heater at a Home depot display in 2003.
Since we wanted to gain some real estate for a Basement bathroom we liked the idea of a tankless water heater.
The benefits of continuous hot water and energy savings verses continually heating a tank also sold us.
I generally like to research any investment in home improvement and knew the specs on the 125SX model did not have sufficient water heating power for complete water supply to a family of 4 in a 2000 sq ft single detached home in Pickering, Ont.
When the 250SX model came in and was suitable for supplying up to 3 hot water appliances we went for it.

In the Bosch technical manuals and installation instructions I read there is a remote reset control was available for the water heater. At the time I thought what do you need that for?
The manuals indicated a certain gas pressure and water pressure were required for correct operation.
In order to conform to the Bosch recommended supply requirements we hired a licenced plumber to re-pipe our main water connection and a water heater installation co. with a licenced gas fitter to send a second gas line to the water heater from the Gas Meter and install the Tankless unit.

The heater has now been in use for 3 years and every time we turn on the hot water the unit will not supply hot water until you run down stairs and clear "Er" (error) with the reset button 2 or 3 times.
The information from Bosch that I used to research never indicated that the error display will activate every time there is a call for hot water and that you will physically burn more calories than the water heater does since the control design will not allow you to run this unit by simply turning on the hot water.

Based on the reviews I have read and our own experience I think that if Bosch and Home Depot has any integrity it should recognize what a lemon these units are and recall the lot of them.
