Helped My Daughter Prepare for the SSAT

Written: Dec 07 '07
Pros:Clearly gave the information, skills and techniques needed to score well on the SSAT
Cons:None!
The Bottom Line: I recommend this book to any student who is planning to take the SSAT because it is full of valuable information that will help you get your best possible score.

My daughter is a public school student who is looking to attend a private high school next year. I got this book for her in the months leading up to her scheduled SSAT. My daughter has always gotten excellent grades in public school, but she was shocked when she got this book and realized that she needed a lot of preparation to get ready for this test. Her public school education simply had not covered a lot of the material that was on the SSAT.
My daughter worked hard, using this book as a guide of what she had to learn for the SSAT. The book included practice tests that she took to give her a sense of how much progress she was making. The book also clearly explained good test taking strategies.
This book really teaches the test well. My daughter learned what kinds of questions would be on the SSAT, and how to go about solving them. The vocabulary and analogies was most challenging for my daughter- the book taught her how to best solve analogy problems. My daughter made flash cards from every vocabulary word that was presented in this book, and she studied them every day. The book also taught her how to improve her vocabulary score by studying root words, that was a great help to my daughter.

Having this book made a big help to my daughter. Without this book, she would not have understood the special techniques you need to know to do well on the SSAT. She would not have known she had to learn certain math skills, and I know this book improved her verbal score. Granted, this is no miracle book- my daughter was determined and worked very hard for a long time to prepare for the SSAT. But this book was a valuable tool. My daughter ended up with an overall score of 92%, which in the world of SSAT scoring is excellent! I don't think we would have seen better results if we had put her in a formal SSAT prep class instead of letting her study on her own with this book.
