These are the times to remember (artemisadorned's age 17 w/o)

The Bottom Line See what I was like at 17. I'm afraid I'm not that interesting.

This is my rather late entry into artemisadorned’s write-off. (See http://www.epinions.com/content_4039549060.) I didn’t see this write-off until recently and had to reminisce myself. I might be a little closer to age 17 then many people here, but it was still fun to look back.

1. Who were your best friends, or were you a friendless geek? What was the most interesting fun that you had together? Just like today, I could never settle on one group of friends, I preferred to mix and mingle between a few. I hung out with two girls that were really kind of geeks but I think I brought them out of their shell a little. I also spent a lot of time with the drama and band kids.

2. What was your favorite food? Have you out grown your fondness for it? Was this food involved in a food fight? Now and forever, Kozy Shack rice pudding. I remember one weekend I was pulling 3 straight shifts at the ghetto movie theater I was working at and I didn’t really have time for dinner on Saturday night so I had my dad bring me the other half of my tub of pudding from home. Very nutritious dinner.

3. Did you have a pet- real or imaginary? Were you the teacher's pet. Maybe you were the animal- fess up! I had two pets. My black lab, Pearl and the zebra finch, Sylvester (his brother Tweety died the year before). Sylvester died the next year when I was off at college (the night of the first Presidential debate actually, but that is really off of the topic). And I might have been a bit of a teacher’s pet, but that was only for teacher’s I liked, the others felt my silent wrath.

4. What was your most memorable, life changing moment- in school or out. Did it involve any psychedelics? I honestly do not know. 17 was a great year for me, but I don’t know if it was especially life-changing. As far as memorable goes, I’d have to go with when I played Grandma Tzeitel in our school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. It was really fun and a one in a lifetime experience for me.

5. Were you still a virgin at 17? Are you still? I most definitely was. Now? Not so much (but don’t tell my mother! She is happy in the land of denial).

6. What was the most wicked thing you did? Did anyone find out? Were you grounded or just thrown in jail? I don’t think I really did anything that bad when I was 17. Sorry, I guess I’m just boring. I got all of my angst stuff out of the way when I was younger.

7. How many guys or girls did you date when you were 17? Do you still keep in touch with them? Is your current mate jealous? I didn’t really date in high school, unless you count bringing friends to the random school dances and such. And the current mate is not jealous because imaginary people cannot be jealous of other imaginary people.

8. What was your favorite subject in school? Or are you a high school drop out? Did you get to skip a grade because you are a genius? My favorite class was definitely AP English. It was a pretty small close-knit class and our teacher was great. I have nothing but fond memories of it.

9. What was the make and the condition of the car you drove. Were you guilty of any traffic violations or worse? Were you randy? I drove my mother’s old 1990 Dodge Caravan. My uncle had helped to fix it up somewhat the year before but it still had some quirks. Like sometimes the gas pedal wouldn’t exactly work and there would be a couple seconds delay between when you pushed the pedal and when it would kick in. It also didn’t have any heat, which was a problem some mornings. I remember driving to school with my younger sister, deciding that we would be teenage idiots with a twist. Roll down the windows and crank up the radio early in the morning, but blaring Disney songs. Little things like that were fun.

10. Did you know what you wanted to do with your life? Did you aspire to be a beauty queen, fireman or a Dentist? Or just be plain old brilliant and discover... I had no clue what I wanted to do. To tell you the truth, I still don’t know.

11. Where did you live? The city, rural America, suburbia, out of this country... or in your own private, little world? I lived in an annoying suburb of Baltimore, though I did not realize how annoying it was yet. I was pretty sheltered going to Catholic school in my white-bread town.

12. Sisters and brothers are, were, still are.....
How many? Were you an only child? Do you wish you were an only child? Did you see to it that you were?
I had, and continue to have a sister who is two years younger than me. I was responsible for driving her everywhere, including to school with me each morning. We were both in chorus homeroom so her locker was right next to mine, which I didn’t really like. We were farther enough in age that I didn’t exactly consider her my peer and close enough that we had mutual friends, so it was difficult.

13. Did you get into the college of your choice? Were you college bound? Did you end up with a great job flipping burgers? Are you famous now because of the choice you made then? I did get into the college of my choice, but better yet I got a full ride to the college of my choice. It looked as if I was going to end up going to the college my dad worked at because of financial reasons. So when I got that letter in the mail, I was pretty happy.

14. What was your favorite music, group, singer at 17? Do you listen to them today? Did your parents ever break your records? Did you play an instrument or in a group? I honestly don’t remember if I had any favorite music groups at that age. I was pretty into showtunes at that age, and still am today. I spent a lot of time with drama people so that influenced me quite a bit. I played handbells in my church’s choir and was in chorus in school, but that was the extent of my musical ability.

15. Tell us about your prom... Theme, date, outfit. What dance was popular then. What was your "after the prom" fun. I dare you to post a picture of yourself, your date. Prom was great. We didn’t do any of that stupid theme or king and queen stuff, we just had fun. I bought my dress for $20 at a going-out-of-business sale. It was this blue violet sheath type dress with a velvet overlay. I brought a friend with me as my date and we snuck my other friend out of her house to come along (her dad was really strict). After prom was even better. At our school, the junior parents put on the after prom party for the senior class. They rented out the ESPN Zone in the Inner Harbor for the night and we had unlimited play.

16. Did you belong to any after school clubs or sports? Were you ever in the newspaper because of these activities? I did Chorus every morning and was active in drama stuff (assistant stage manager in fall production of “Little Women”, above mention of “Fiddler”, did something in the Spring Revue). I was also big into Forensics where I did Lincoln-Douglas debate. I didn’t play any sports but was the manager for the Softball team. I don’t think I was ever in the paper when I was 17, unless it was the school paper.

17. The biggie and final question... Would you ever do it all over again if you could? Remember the drama and the hormones and the angst before you answer. That’s an odd question. Do over as in change things? Then no. I think it went pretty decently the way it was. Would I want to relieve it? Maybe parts of it from time to time. Like I don’t really want to go through Calculus all over again.

Wow, this analysis of my seventeenth year makes me sound almost Stepford-like. I guess I was pretty boring back then (and probably still am). I’m also sure that I was wearing rose-colored glasses when writing this.
