I've been using AbeBooks for several years. When my Mom asked me once to try to find an obscure out-of-print book for her, I tried Amazon and some of the other typical bookseller websites without luck. I heard of this wonderful resource, AbeBooks because they have an extensive database network of new and used books, specializing in out-of-print and obscure books. I was able to easily find a couple of copies of the book my Mom was looking for (an old fiction book about Egypt) with a range conditions of the book and of prices to choose from.
We have also used AbeBooks for textbook purchases. One time, my son, who was in high school at the time needed a textbook for one of his classes. It was no where to be found even though we searched the local bookstores. We checked on Amazon and almost bought a copy of this expensive book, but at the last minute I thought about AbeBooks. I went to their website (to the "textbook room) and found a used copy for a fraction of the cost of the new textbook. We received our order just in time for his class too!
As an experiment, I tried typing in an obscure book title into AbeBooks search area while writing this review. It worked instantly, giving me 62 results starting with the lowest price ($1.00) to the highest price ($52.40) and best condition of this old book. (Just for comparison purposes, I once paid about $65 for a copy of what I thought was a good price for this book in the days before the internet!) And
AbeBooks offers FREE shipping!
Since that time, I have used AbeBooks for many other books and I have ALWAYS been able to find them on their website. The website is simple to navigate and the customer service is very good. There are several ways to search for the book you want. You can search via the name of the book, the author's name, keywords, or ISBN number.
AbeBooks is home to over 13,500 professional booksellers from around the world. You can search for a bookseller by name, country, or location. There are Abebooks websites in many countries outside the USA. You can find out more information about this on the bottom of their webpage.
Once I ordered an obscure book on the topic of Manic-Depression (for a relative) and after a few weeks I still had not received it. When contacted, AbeBooks promptly credited my back the full amount. It was not their fault, but the bookseller somehow made an error on my order and did not send it. I then re-ordered it through another bookseller and got it very quickly.
As on other websites, AbeBooks keep a history of what you have purchased. I find this to be very handy because I can't always remember when I've purchased a book and sometimes need to be able to refer back to that information. Then too, another nice feature is that they will suggest other books you may be interested in, based on your past orders. (I know Netflix also does something like this when they are suggesting new movies for you.). Abebooks has a terrific informative website packed with ideas and even an Avid Readers Book Club and a blog. There is also an extensive childrens selection of books, rare books, new and used and even signed by author books, so get busy, Christmas is just around the corner!
