First Presidential Debate 2004: Kerry 1 - Bush 0Oct 01 '04 (Updated Oct 12 '04) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Think the election has been decided already? Only if you want more of the same. Just remember that you wanted it! The first debate in 2004 is history and campaigns are already hyper-active to reduce any possible damage by repeating the same argument over and over again. The president didn't look good last night, but by the time today's analysis' are over it sure will look in some eyes as if he clearly won the debate. Both the smirk and the rebuttal jokes -- trademarks of the 43. president -- were sort of absent this time. A clear indication that the president was too busy (and sometimes annoyed) thinking about the 'correct' answer. Nevertheless he was trained well by his administration and dutyfully repeated the one argument they seem to connect best with the voters. (Who cares that it has no foundation?) Knowing George W. could never win a direct debate, he was (uncharacteristically) 'smart' to stick to the plan of repeating the same thing at every opportunity, to finally make it the 'truth'. Nevermind that independent organizations like www.factcheck.org already concluded that the whole 'waffle' accusation is simply wrong once you see the documents from which the arguments were ripped. But it makes for a few jokes and amazingly enough, even journalists ride the wave as it puts some spice in their reports too. Does anybody remember that some of the greatests minds concluded knowledge is infinite and only by learning more one will acknowledge how much we don't know? Albert Einstein said something to this extend and did that make him unfit to be a scientist? Kerry's education is obvious and it's just natural that he tries to see things in their context as situations change. Something Bush never seems to bother with. The Earth is a disc and there is Good and Evil -- all he needs to know. Both sides one more time twisted a few facts in their favor and sometimes to make a point (as mostly for Kerry) and other times to distract from the actual question. Kerry exaggerated the spending in the Iraq war (his number is right, but not for what has been spent already -- it's the approved amount of money to be spent). Bush claimed to have brought 75% of all terrorists to justice, ignoring the increased recruitment and new battlegrounds we didn't have to worry about before the war. Then Kerry slips and leaves Poland off the short list of our allies. Poland must have been proud how Bush stood up for their 1% contribution and the "very important part of the mission". Ohhh, and in case you didn't catch it the other 10 times, of course "Kerry is changing his position everytime". ;-) Nevertheless, America doesn't seem to care. And this is the single point why George W. may get another chance to beat his own record of taking the most vacation during a presidency than any other of the 42 presidents before him. And frankly, if I was American I would be upset with that! "Respected in the World" sounds good to me, but frankly (or unfortunately) not too many people give a certain animal's behind. It seems enough to show that we're strong, and kicking somebody's behind with our military sure does the trick. Diplomacy? Overrated! Who cares that with this cowboy manner all we really did is give terrorism recruiters more arguments and a more defined enemy? 'USA' is easier to target that say 'World'. "Undecided voters" in today's media and campaign culture almost look like a made-up group to artificially keep the outcome of the race somewhat undecided. Is there really such thing? If so, these are most likely non-voters. The others are looking for justification of their (sometimes subconcious) choice and most likely not receptive to arguments that could proove differently. That's why repeating the same stuff over and over is so crucial. It doesn't matter whether it's true, if you just repeat it often enough. And one can always rely on the greater part of the American public to not make any effort to find out the real story anyway. Don't care for partisan spin? Go to www.factcheck.org!
