The Bottom Line THE FIVE SATINS BEGAN AS AN R&B DOO-WOP GROUP FORMED FROM REMNANTS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL BAND “THE SCARLETS” WHO HAD FORMED IN 1953

The Scarlets formed in New Haven, CT with members “Fred Parris”, “Al Denby”, “Sylvester Hopkins”, Nate Mosley” and “Bill Powers”. They signed a contract with “Bobby Richardson” and his “Red Robin” records in 1953. They released a total of 4 singles in 1954, none of which made the charts. In 1954 Parris is inducted into the Army and while serving in the Far East he writes “In The Still Of The Nite” while performing guard duty one night. When he returns to the US on Military leave the group records the song on a 2-track tape recorder in the basement of the New Haven Church. They rename themselves the “Five Satins” now with Parris, Denby, and new members “Jim Freeman”, “Ed Martin” and “Jessie Murphy”. They sign a contract with “Standord” records a small local independent label.

Their first release in July 1956 is “All Mine” but it fails to make the charts. In the meantime their second record “In The Still Of The Nite” is hitting big in the New York City area. “Ember”records buy the rights to the song and re-issue it on their label and it debuts on the national pop chart on 8 September. In November it peaks at #24 on the national chart and peaks at #3 on the R&B chart. It would go all the way to #1 in the New York City area and sell over a million copies. On 15 February 1957 they begin a US tour on “Irving Feld’s” “Greatest Show Of 1957” with “Chuck Berry”, “Fats Domino”, “LaVern Baker” and many others. They next release “Wonderful Girl” followed by “Oh Happy Day” but both singles fail to make the charts. “Oh Happy Day” would become a #4 hit in 1969 for “The Edwin Hawkins Singers” and go to #40 by “Glen Campbell” in 1970.

On 22 July they released “To The Aisle” and it went on to peak at #25 on the pop chart and peaks at #5 on the R&B chart. In August Parris returns to Japan to finish his tour of duty and is replaced by “Bill Baker” as the lead singer. They next release “The Five Satins Sing” but it fails to make any of the album charts. They appear for the first time on national TV on 21 October on American Bandstand” now showing nationally on ABC. In 1958 after completing his Military duty Parris returns to the US and reforms the group. This time the group includes Parris, “Jim Freeman”, “West Forbes”, “Lou Peeples” and “Sylvester Hopkins”. On 30 November 1959 “Shadows” makes its’ US pop chart debut and eventually peaks at #87 and peaks at #27 on the R&B singles chart.

During the past 2 years “In The Still Of The Nite” still playing regularly around the East Coast and re-enters the US pop chart on 4 January 1960 and peaks at #81 this time around. On 9 May “I’ll Be Seeing You” from the 1938 Broadway musical “Right This Way” debuts on the singles chart later peaking at #79 on the pop chart. The song was previously a #1 hit for “Bing Crosby” in 1944. This single was followed by “Encore, Volume 2” but it too fails to make any of the album charts. On 23 January 1961 “In The Still Of The Night/I’ll Remember” (now spelled Night instead of Nite) re-appears on the chart for an unprecedented 3rd time but this time it peaks at #99 during a 1 week stay on the pop chart.
On 15 June 1962 they make their second appearance on American Bandstand.

From this point on the group changed many times over and they also changed record labels many times to include “Cub” records, “Chancellor” records, “Red Bird” records and “United Artists” records to name a few. None of their releases during the 60’s or 70’s made any of the charts. In 1973 Parris reformed the group once again with the original members along with Freeman, “Jimmy Curtis”, “Nate Marshall” and started calling themselves “Fred Parris & The Five Satins”. They next appear in the Musical Documentary “Let The Good Times Roll” with “Chuck Berry”, “Little Richard”, “Fats Domino”, “Chubby Checker”, “Bo Diddley”, “The Shirelles”, “The Coasters”, “Danny & The Juniors” and “Bill Haley & The Comets”.

In 1974 they signed a new contract with “Kirshner” records and released “Two Different Worlds” but it too failed to make the singles charts. In 1975 they back-up “Shirley Alston” formally the lead singer of “The Shirelles”, record her version of “In The Still Of The Night” on her album “With A Little Help From My Friends”. After helping Shirley they decide to change the name of the group to “Black Satin”. They had one charting hit this year in “Everybody Stand Up And Clap Your Hands (For The Entertainer)”. It peaked at #49 on the R&B chart and went to #15 on the new Disco singles chart. The group decided to go back to the name “Fred Parris & The Five Satins” and on 27 February 1982 released “Memories Of Days Gone By” on “Elektra” records. The single was a medley of several hit singles by other artists. The songs were “Sixteen Candles”, “Earth Angel”, “Only You (And You Alone)”, “A Thousand Miles Away”, “Tears On My Pillow”, “Since I Don’t Have You” and “In The Still Of The Night (I’ll Remember)” and it peaked at #71 on the US pop chart.

Throughout the remainder of the 80’s and 90’s Fred led any different versions of the “Five Satins” as they traveled around the US and Europe on Oldies and Nostalgia tours. On 26 February 1998 the group is honored at the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award ceremonies at the Sheraton Hotel ballroom in New York City. SOME SONG LYRICS

IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT (I’LL REMEMBER)

Shoo-doo, shooby-do
Shoo-doo, shooby-do
Shoo-doo, shooby-do
Shoo-doo, shooby Whoa

In the still of the night
I held you, held you tight
'cause I love, love you so
Promise I'll never let you go
In the still of the night in the still of the night

I remember, I remember that night in May I remember
The stars, I remember were bright a-a-bo-o-o-ove I remember
I'll hope, I remember and I'll pray, I remember
To keep your presh shus lo-o-o-o-o-ove

Well before the liight
Hold me again
With all of your might
In the still of the night (in the still of the night

So before the liight
Hold me again
With all of your might
In the still of the night in the still of the night

In the still of the night

TO THE AISLE

First a boy and a girl meet each other
Then they sit down to talk for a while.
In your heart you'll want her for a lover,
while each step draws you closer to the aisle.

You may start with a simple conversation.
My darling please put me on trial.
She says yes and your heart starts beating,
While each step draws you closer to the aisle.

You ask her if she loves you
She answers "I do."
Your heart starts glowing inside.
And then you will know she is just for you,
While each step draws you closer to the aisle.

Then you put a ring on her finger.
And the tears start flowing awhile.
Then you'll know she's yours forever
While each step draws you closer to the aisle.

JAGUARDOG’S FINAL THOUGHTS

The “Five Satins” first charting and only million selling hit “In The Still Of The Nite” was performed by several other artists. “Santo & Johnny” who had a #58 hit with it in 1964 did the next charting version of the song. A version done by “Paul Anka” peaked at #64 in 1969. “Boys II Men” did the biggest selling version in 1993. Their version peaked at #3 and went platinum for them. The song was also performed in the 2-part made for TV Biography “The Jacksons: An American Dream” starring “Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs”, “Angela Bassett”, “Billy Dee Williams”, “Venessa Williams”, “Jermaine Jackson” and many others. The music sound of the “Five Satins” was elegant, innocent, intimate, mannered, naïve, organic, refined, romantic, sensual, sentimental, smooth and wistful.

I did own their 2 biggest hits on singles and was a big, big fan of the doo-wop sound. Some of my other favorite doo-wop groups that I also owned records of were “The Dell Vikings”, “The Moonglows”, “The Orioles”, “The Flamingos”, “The Penguins”, “The Platters” and “The Silhouettes” to name a few. Well that’s all I have for this week ladies and gentlemen and I hope you all enjoyed it? Next week I will be covering a lady born in Asheville, NC known as “Roberta Flack”. Thank you all very much for dropping by and reading and rating and please leave a comment if you wish. I hope everyone has a Wonderful and Safe weekend and God Bless you ALL!
