Impertinent Thoughts on Pertinent Subjects XLII

The Bottom Line Another month, another column...

Off and running...

* Since my last column at the end of August, we've lost another Ramone...why is it we lose Johnny and Joey, and Joe Strummer from The Clash, but Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols is still breathing? Where's the justice in that? R.I.P. Johnny Ramone, we shall never forget.

* Am I the only one who could really care less about the Nirvana box set that's getting released? The critics will fawn all over it even if it sucks, because it features their favorite butt boy, Kurt Cobain. Hopefully, the Epinions writers will be more candid and honest when evaluating the set.

* Don't get me started on Cat Stevens and his whole situation...

* Is there a bigger egotistical a*s than Marilyn Manson? For a dude who's music has always sucked, and who's album sales have gone into the tank, he has one hell of an ego.

* And now that that's been settled, please tell me that that awful pop group Busted is not going to see chart success in this country...jesus they are TERRIBLE.

* Is it just me, or does Vanessa Carlton write the catchiest, stick in your head songs ever?

* Speaking of terrible, the new single from The Donnas goes into that category. Oh well, at least Spend the Night was cool.

* Didn't Nelly already write that song My Place for his last record, except instead of a male singing the hook, he had Kelly Rowland? Oh yeah, that's what I thought.

* Why is Avril Lavigne singing the Spongebob Squarepants theme in the upcoming Spongebob movie? Why must they make me sit through her whiny voice when I'm going to see something cool?

* The new Sum 41 video is priceless, it's just too bad the song sucks.

* The Killers are the latest example of a bad band getting way more press, attention and praise than they every could deserve.

* If there is any justice in the world, The Used's new album will bomb, and they will disappear and I'll never have to hear from them again.

* After repeated listenings, the new U2 track, Vertigo, is really growing on me. That album title though (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb) is atrocious.

* Note to Spin: Howlin' Pelle Almqvist isn't cool, and neither is Brandon Flowers and half of the other people on your "cool" list.

* Kudos to Weezer for deciding to not rush out their new album. If nothing else, Maladroit felt rushed and under-developed, and so the fact that they are taking their time with this one will hopefully mean a better all around album.

* Greatest hits albums by some 90s rock stalwarts are on the map. Pearl Jam's two disc hits collection comes out in November, along with Live's CD/DVD combo. The guess here? PJ's goes double platinum or so (thanks to the inclusion of tracks like Crazy Mary), while Live's doesn't sell very well. And speaking of Live, where do they get off charging $35 for tickets still?

* Congrats are in order to Shadows Fall for their top 20 debut on the Billboard album charts.

* As is becoming the norm for them, Bowling for Soup's video for 1985 is hilarious. It doesn't change the fact that the song, and the band, sucks.

* I find it disturbing that CBS gets fined 550K for the Janet Jackson incident, but Janet and Justin get off scotch free with just a whole lot of free publicity...

* Five more songs I could do without ever hearing again: Dare You to Move, Switchfoot. She Will Be Loved, Maroon 5. Love Song, 311. Move Ya Body, Nina Sky, and Breaking the Habit by Linkin Park.

* And lastly this month, congrats are in order to Green Day for a well deserved #1 bow on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.
