Thanks for sharing your story. Here is another one that somehow got brushed off, but explains the president's boost in confidence (and delivering actual facts ... his normally weak spot).

you're welcome. There is a lot of black and white thinking these days. I just hope people come to their senses once this whole thing is over. (Yeah right.)

Thanks for the summary (Reply to this comment)
by AliventiAsylum
We were camping and I only managed to catch part of the debate - saw the abortion question and thought Kerry handles it quite well, showing that the world has many shades of grey - everything is not black or white; right or wrong. Your summary of the rest of it is greatly appreciated!

"There you go again."—...???
( I'll let you guess at the origin of that quote...)
Last time I checked my copy of the Constitution the rights of freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to protest applied to everyone of every age and had for over two hundred years.
Looking forward to more . . .and November 3.

'Enduring' would not be the right word. I find them challenging to read and they certainly help me understand the thoughts of you and oh so many others.
Don't you dare stop.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag."

Well I never said I am neutral. Thanks anyway for enduring my blurbs as we're all exercising freedom of speech and ultimately democracy here.

Your choice of words and phrasing of that thought speaks volumes.
I will be glad when this whole sordid (with apologies to the clown) mess is over and we can all go back to arguing about important things like 'trust-sluts' and whether 'Helpful' is a good rate.

2nd Debate (Reply to this comment)
by skbreese
Yea, I think facile pretty aptly sums up Bush's performance last night! He was constantly blinking his eyes and scribbling notes while Kerry was speaking to avoid sneering. I'm sure he was coached on that by his advisors. I thought he was going to jump up and choke the moderator at one point, when he tried to keep him from interrupting Kerry. He made a few weak attempts at jokes, but it was clear that Kerry has the more commanding presence and has a wealth of intelligence and depth that Bush sorely lacks. I was looking forward to your take on this one, and again, you are right on target. Can't wait for next week's finale. Sheila

Hi Tom,
the 60% - 80% of course refer to the question who won the debate. I take it, the notion that Kerry may win the election doesn't comfort you much? You may not have to worry as the politically interested public may sway to Kerry, but the passive majority still seems to stand by our (s)elected prez.

". . .but I have to agree with the initial polls right after the debate which one more time showed Kerry in the lead with 60% - 80%."
Huhh? These are 'who won' polls or 'who will you vote for' polls? I would hope the former.
you said...
"While Bush kept to his strategy of using principles rather than facts, Kerry continued to use a wealth of statistics and facts to answer questions and of course attack the president."
I found his 'pounding the facts' became quite old very quickly. As did his constant recitations of Admirals and Generals and three-men-in-a-tub who support him and his ideas.
you said...
"Now I may be wrong but wasn't there another report that showed that Saddam had no connection to Al Qaeda?"
I am sure one of your other readers will provide a link to this factoid. I do believe the '9/11 Commission' report said there was no connection between Saddam, Al Qaeda and the events of 9/11. A fine point that gets 'slurred over' in the discussion of that point.
you said...
"Bill Clinton was obviously not perfect, but he understood to drive goals while engaging allies."
...:sleeper-shaking-his-head:...
you continued...
"Currently, all we achieved is to set a precedence that preemptive strikes are okay if you're strong enough. (Other countries are already picking up on that.)"
'Already picking up on that'...??
Interesting thoughts and discussion as always.

Supreme Court Justices Question (Reply to this comment)
by theficionado
How morally correct of Mr. Bush to shun slavery.
Were you pained by the debate as well? I especially enjoyed how the candidates disregarded the questions they were asked routinely to repeat the same attacks without pause. I'd still give the upper hand to Mr. Kerry, though, especially with his vicious attacks at the beginning. As he cooled off, Mr. Bush gained some momentum, but Mr. Kerry still was the winner in my book. I may, of course, be a little biased.
