Re: No I have not (Reply to this comment)

No that is one story I have not read or previous heard about. I have been to many sites checking on this possibility and have not found it mentioned one time anywhere. That is however an interesting prospect. Thanks a lot for reading and signing up with Epinions just to leave me a comment. Sorry I did not respond sooner as I never received an Email to let me know there was a comment on this posting.

I just read your very compelling critique about Roberta Flack, and the sidebar about Donny Hathaway.
I was curious about the allegation that he left the window intentionally via suicide, or accidentally, by fall. At the time, the most frequent rumor I heard was that he was intentionally dropped from the window, murdered, because of failed negotiations with music industry figures. Have you heard of this?

I did some more research on Donny and found his death on 10 different web sites. 8 of them indicate accident and 2 indicate suicide so I hope it was an accident and not suicide?

You're welcome, Ron - and thanks for the mention. I did a little bit of web research to discover who wrote "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," in addition to owning the Highwaymen.
On gaelkm's comment, some do consider Donny Hathaway's death a suicide, but I think the coroner ruled the cause as inconclusive. Thanks again.

Re: Wonderful review.... - I'm not sure myself? (Reply to this comment)
by JAGUARDOG
I have found it listed both ways but most of the sites I visited indicate fell and not jumped so not sure which one to believe? Here is one report I found:
"The 25th anniversary of the death of Donny Hathaway passed quietly last month. Hathaway was three months past his 33rd birthday, when he fell out of the window of a New York City hotel on January 13, 1979."
Here is a second:
"Why this gifted musician should take his own life remains unexplained, but on 13 January 1979, Hathaway threw himself from the 15th floor of New York's Essex House hotel."
I cannot find a concensus so I felt like he was doing great and had no reason to jump and hope he did not. I know falling out of a window sounds very strange but I'll go for accident for now.
Thanks for the comments.

...I remember when "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face..." came out and what a sensation it was. I had also heard that Donnie Hathaway had commit suicide, not fallen to his death. "Where is the Love" was a favorite song; I thought they made a great duet!
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you were agreeing with but I agree with your idea and have added almost all of my sources like you suggested. That was a great idea even though I have seen it done very often by you and others I never gave it much importance until you mentioned it might be a good idea so thanks.
I didn't know about her playing in Gay bars or speaking out so openly against them. I had not heard or read that anywhere so let me apologize to you for her uncalled for rudeness.

I very much agree with that comment. Listing sources would cover your bases as well as a few other things. I always get the feeling that I'm reading the back of a record cover or that you've gone someplace on the web to gather all this information. I do it myself, but I give credit and the URLs in my reviews so people can go look at it for themselves.
As for Roberta, we used to go and see her in some gay bar south of Capitol Hill in the 60s when I worked in DC. She made disparaging remarks about gays then just like Donna Summers did and neither of them can understand why we don't like or support them. Just thought I'd get that one in.

Actually (Reply to this comment)
by pmills1210, in Music
Roberta Flack did not compose "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," as many sources indicate. The writer was Ewan MacColl (1915-89), and the first recordings of it date back to 1962, when Kitty White recorded it, as well as MacColl's wife, Peggy Seeger. I have a sixties recording of it by The Highwaymen. Others who recorded it before Flack include Chad Mitchell (1964) and Gordon Lightfoot (1966). This popular song has also been recorded in more recent years by Johnny Cash and Celine Dion.
Also, Donna Mills was one of the key actresses in "Play Misty For Me," not Donna Miles. I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing!
Sincerely, Pat

I have to wonder where you got all of this information. Is it stored in your head or did you use another website or some liner notes or something of the sort? There is no shame in using sources, heck it's very much expected when writing a history (and a very complete one I might add!), but references would make your essay more authoritative and give your facts a frame of reference. Anyway, just some friendly advice, do with it as you wish.
