I have found that the HP Tape Backup drives work exceptionally well with these servers. They're also covered under the server's on-site warranty if purchased with the server. The warranties for these servers are greatly improved over previous warranty models. No additional warranty contracts are required to be purchased, and your reseller should be able to service this product if they have the proper authorizations. Previous models required you to buy a separate contract which could only be serviced by a few locations in the entire country (you can count the number of these service centers on your fingers). Supported Operating Systems
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0
- Microsoft Windows NT Small Business Server 4.5
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Novell Netware 4.2 & 5.1
- Novell Small Business Suite 5
- RedHat Linux 6.2
- SCO Unix OpenServer 5.05
Additional OS'es may function as well, but are not specifically listed by HP at this time. Personally, I have installed Windows NT 4 Terminal Server with Citrix MetaFrame and had excellent results. I would not recommend this for a large Citrix Farm due only to its limited processor and memory scalability. However, for a single server in a small company, it works beautifully. Documentation on OS installation is very complete and helpful. I have installed SCO OpenServer 5.01 on this server (which I had no familiarity with at the time), and many installation issues I encountered were easily resolved in the documentation included on the Netserver Navigator CD-ROM. I do have some issues with the drivers included on the Navigator CD. I often find that the drivers are somewhat outdated or do not function as I expect under a given OS. However, drivers are easily located on HP's web site (although you generally have to download all the drivers for any given OS to get the one you need). Minor issue if you have a speedy internet connection.
My Experiences
I currently have one of these servers running as an NT4 PDC, WINS Server, DHCP Server, DNS server, Proxy Server, VPN Host, Backup server, Virus Scan management server, and company file server. While we run a small internal network, I have been nothing but pleased by its performance. There have been no throughput issues, everything runs quickly and without errors. I have never had a driver issue/conflict or any type of hardware problem with the server. We sell many of these servers to our clients and experience similar results. As I noted above, the server performs well in a single-server Citrix environment for a small company, which is a good test of performance for any server. This is an excellent server for a small to medium office or branch office that provides a very good price to performance ratio.
