We've learned a LOT about the Solar System---still a LOT to learn!

I am indeed disappointed that you live in Arizona--a primo location for firsthand observations without freezing to death--and haven't yet purchased a scope in order to help drive down the prices for the rest of us even more.

The stuff that's available on the market at such relatively cheap prices yet of decent quality compared to ten years ago is mind-boggling. The major manufacturers are waging vicious, no-holds-barred price wars and can barely keep up with demand.

We're counting on you. The Chinese factory workers are counting on you.

My motives and concern is purely selfish.

Oldcomixfan sez:

I prefer firsthand observations.

Hope you're not TOO disappointed to know I was writing about stuff I've read, found intensely interesting, and felt the urge to share.

But it WOULD be a great time to be an astronomer! I've heard of plans for a 30 meter scope, and some very early plans for a 100 meter telescope. Wow! But I'm just an interested onlooker---

...tom... was looking for more mnemonics, our dear, dear friends. Jasun P. -- Roy G. Biv's buddy.

Neptune
Pluto

There's another naughtier variation on that one, but I shall refrain.

Hi Tom--

You say: Though I would argue for some type of intelligent intervention at some point.

Seems likely to me---maybe MUCH more than likely!

Ah! The big light buckets of the pros. The images available in cyberspace from those monsters are something else. The "Astronomy 101" had me thinking you were in a class or something. Not that there's really anything wrong with that; I prefer firsthand observations. I think there's at least two decent-sized robotic scopes a person can actually control via the internet and download real-time images after booking reservations for a timeslot and paying an hourly fee--at least 60 bucks/hr. I can't remember the names offhand, but one is located on Mauna Kea I do believe.

Just wait until the next generation of Hubbles are launched. Imaging of nearby Earth-like planets may be a definite possibility along with no telling what else.

There's a '73 Ford Mustang orbiting the Earth according to the Weekly World News. NASA wants to know who put it there--and why. I'm sure there's a logical explanation.

The quotes don't always reflect my personal thoughts or beliefs . . .but they do this time. Though I would argue for some type of intelligent intervention at some point.

Us 'have an argument' . . .?!? What, there aren't enough 'Kerry's phools' around to argue with . . .??

Re King Phillip, Tom says:

Sorry . . .I am a strict 'creationist'---because my Bible tells me so!!! ...not. and goes on to quote Ron Peterson:

"Creation science is an attempt to give credibility to Hebrew mythology by making people believe that the world's foremost biologists, paleontologists, and geologists are a bunch of incompetent nincompoops."

I think I'm with you and Ron there, Tom--so if we want to have an argument we'll have to pick a different subject.

Hi Oldcomixfan--

You asked: What kind of scope are you folks using?

I'm told that the information I discussed has been gathered using these "'scopes:"

-A 48 inch scope at Palomar Mountain is regularly scanning the Kuiper Belt, and has the ability to see objects 1/200th the brightness of Jupiter.

-A 3.8 meter scope at Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, AZ, is being used to scan the Kuiper Belt for objects as small as 30 miles in diameter.

-A 3.6 meter scope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii are tracking the orbits of some 1000 Kuiper Belt objects.

-The Hubble Space telescope has found 3 objects about 1 1/2 times the orbit of Pluto, far fewer than expected.

No doubt there are countless other observatories doing significant work in these regions, but the above are the ones I've read about.

And thanks for asking!

Regards,
Gavia
