| jimmz's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
I kinda bought into current LCD craze and purchased Sony KDL-40V3000. First of all, you gotta have certain comparison benchmark. I still have the 2 year old 32" CRT Toshiba, so I'll be comparing Sony with that one. I think the picture you see in the stores and the one you'd see in your home will be quite different. In the stores they are playing very carefully chosen HD-content,usually brightly lit landscape scenery or worse - cartoons. Of course, this looks great. At home you'll have a wider variety of signals. I connected the TV via HDMI with HD-cable set-top box and HDMI dvd home theater. Here are the results. HD sports and brightly-lit scenery (HD Discovery and TSN) looks great and contrasty. But Standard definition channels look MUCH worse than on my CRT. Even from 15 feet you still see a lot of digital noise, artefacts, pixellization. Again, depending on the channel, some are bearable, some are horrible. Now, DVD test. Here, Sony leaves much to be desired as well. 1. Where's black? Normal black, not greyish, whitish black, but simple real black. It's non-existent. 2. What about colors? They are really strange - not natural, however you play with the setting you'd still get some nasty hues on the faces.
Another thing, aspect ratio settings. My CRT has about 6 of them, and some of them are adjustable. And this is imporatant, since majority of channels are still in 4:3 mode, so you gotta make some changes to fit the picture well and naturally proportional. Here's, I believe, the 3rd generation of LCDs, you're stuck with 4 preset modes.
And last but not least. For 1.5 grand price would it kill Sony to fork up a nice remote? The one they supply is junk.
To sum it up, after 4 days of excruciating run on the TV's settings (the menu is a mess by the way), 20 different DVDs, I haven't managed to achieve a DVD picture that would exceed the quality level of my good old Toshiba, and the telly went back to the store to find another "satisfied" customer.
