Cheney more likable? He is articulate, probably a very smart man when he isn't defending cretins, but I don't think his constant threatening/intimidating speeches make him likable. Lately, I've thought of him as more loathesome. He seems to be getting more dishonest. For instance, neither he nor his wife made an issue of the gay daughter thing when Edwards originally brought it up, but now it's a "cheap, taudry political trick"... one Cheney thanked Edwards for using (it's a good thing not that many people watched the VP debates.)

Free health care? That has its advantages. OHIP pays for most medical services, even surgeries. On the other hand, people abuse it, setting up appointments whenever they feel something 'might' be wrong, and hospitals are constantly inundated with patients. It kills whenever even alittle funding is cut from health care.

I'd prefer the hospital class system: free and paid health care, one plodding and unbearable, the other efficient. Maybe it would lead our government to improve its current facilities.

A common response is that they'd like to have a beer with the guy... while probably ignorant to the fact that he, I believe reading somewhere, is a recovering alcoholic.

My main fault with Bush, aside from differing from him on nearly all of his policies, is that he is unbelievably ideologically stubborn. I don't know if he doesn't know it, or if he just simply doesn't care, but these tax breaks will eventually kill the American economy as we become more and more reliant on foreign loans. And now I am beginning to rant...

Canada looks damn good. Free health care, too. I envy you.

why anyone finds Dubyah "personable." The smirking son of the boss who is accustomed to someone else doing all the work (including thinking) and getting any credit that is available is NOT generally liked.

Politicians are good at evading questions, but, especially in the first debate, it seemed that Dubyah did not even understand the questions. His handlers got him to stop making faces by the second debate (though he was still blinking like crazy) and his demeanor transformed from "I'm God's annointed, why do I have to listen to someone criticizing me" to hyper-caffeinated attack dog (a chihuahua to Kerry's basset hound?). But his phony smiles did not strike me as likeable. Actually, I thought Cheney came across as more likeable than Dubyah, though his views are scarier.

Nice link. The gist of it is: military commanders don't think the draft would be a good idea, and Republicans defeated a potential draft bill.

The latter is an obvious political move: it comes about one month before the election, and Republicans, having been accused of pushing for a draft, should try to combat that accusation. What that says is, the draft is not coming in Spring of 2005. But there is no guarantee that it won't be instituted afterwards, if Dubya is elected. With a military struggle in Iraq, and the imminent threat from both North Korea and Iran, a draft would be necessary.

In Iraq alone, there is an urgent need for troops, one that has already led to a 'backdoor' draft, where military personnel are forced to stay in service beyond the required time. Forcing people to fight a war against their own will is the very essence of the draft.

And btw, the 'reasoned thought' you quoted does not disprove the potential for a draft. It doesn't even sound very convincing in saying that there probably won't be a draft. If this is the best the 'right' can come up with in dispelling rumors...

The quote isn't word-for-word, you got me there, but it is basically what Dick Cheney said.

you quoted _someone_ as saying...
". . .if Kerry is elected, the country will suffer another major terrorist attack."

How about a source for that one?

After all, this whole process is full of "lies, damn lies, and statistics" *.
