I like most of the movies on your list (Reply to this comment)

...but I thought Far From Heaven, and perhaps Gangs of New York are missing.

This is most interesting in the fact that none of these movies, that I saw, really impressed me. What a boring, subpar year for movies! No foreign films, unless you count the Wedding one that I did enjoy.

Sometimes I'm amazed (Reply to this comment)

at how different our tastes are, and yet we like each other so much. Isn't that weird? Maybe not...
Okay, I just have to get this out: Enough??????????????????????????????????
This made your Top Twenty List? I thought "she" was awful, and the whole set-up ludicrous, though I did buy into a bit while I was watching it. It was only after my brain started to work again that I was ashamed.
I'm not picking on you sweetie, I was just stunned to see that film there (although I did buy it cheap, and then sold it!).
I couldn't get past the first half hour of Punch Drunk Love, Fear Dot Com lost me in the first twenty minutes, and I did enjoy The Ring, but only by default, as we had seen so many bad horror films that month!
I did like Murder By Numbers, but then Sandra is in it. Need I say more? I even bought it on DVD. I liked Unfaithful, but wished there had been more chemistry between Lane and Martinez, and that a few more plot holes had been patched up. I bought this one too, though, and I like the alternate ending better than the theatrical one. I also liked the extras.
And you be smokin'!!!!
Minority Report
Frailty
One Hour Photo
I love the last two more than MR, but I still found it fascinating. Frailty is a truly terrifying film, on all levels, and didn't need cliches or tricks to make it so. And One Hour Photo was almost as terrifying as Sy's loneliness.
In spite of my b*tching about Enough, I liked the list a lot, and I'm only going by the films I've seen. Unfortunately I haven't made it to the Lord Of The Rings yet, but I will get there.
Great job (except for that one...) :)
Love ya!

I don't know, I guess I just like being emotionally manipulated :)

Oh yeah, I knew there'd be other "8 Mile" lovers out there. OH-TWO was a hot year (temperature-wise, I was livin' in the attic) but otherwise, a pretty good one.

Yeah, Enough is one of those love it or hate it kinds, really. As are many movies from this year, really.

Oh yeah, Unfaithful's ending is definitely high on the bittersweet list. But I think even if they had just run away together, I still would've liked it. Judging by the character, I don't think he would need 20 years in the can to learn that he did something wrong. O well. Thanks for droppin' by :)

Dragonfly is actually my favorite of the "bottom five" and quite frankly, it's only there cos I had to put one more and I think that's like the only other movie I reviewed with 3 stars or less that whole year. Me and my easily impressionable self. Glad ya liked One Hour Photo!

Yeah, Y Tu Mama is another one of those I want to see, even though I didn't mention it. Solaris is one of those I've only seen once, and would probably like a lot more with repeated viewings.

I can totally see your point there. It's not always so "pretty" with afflictions like that. I've thought about maybe moving it down a few spots. Actually, I have a lot of problems with the exact order of this thing, that's what I get for doing it in one sitting!

Excellent selection here, Tim.. kudos on your top 5. Especially Fraily. FRAILTY! (it's so good I feel the need to both capitalise and exclaim it)
But, the fact you have Solaris in your bottom 5 is what i'm most impressed with. I bloody hate that movie.
Cheers!

A Walk to Remember?!? (Reply to this comment)
by beckytcy
You call it "wonderfully schmaltzy," which I can understand, but why is it on the good list while 40 Days and 40 Nights and Swimfan are on the bad? Those two movies were unintentionally funny and so bad they were entertaining, and at least they weren't emotionally manipulative.

Tim,
You surely have an interesting selection of movies here. What's wrong with "Solaris" though?! I really enjoyed that one!
Besides that, some of these I love, some of these I can't stand. But for better or worse, this was quite a great list.
Let's take it back to OH-TWO on their as-es!
Oh, and big props for having "8 Mile" there.
peace & love,
Eric

How interesting... (Reply to this comment)
by shelxland
I just saw One Hour Photo for the first time last night. Kind of messed up movie. But it did inspire a conversation between my hubby and I.
I had to admit that if I was a photo tech it would be very hard to not get caught up in the lives of the regular customers, especially ones who have been bringing their pictures in for 10 years or so. Sy crosses the line, of course. But wouldn't anyone, on some level, feel like they knew this family intimately?
Great choices and review!
Shelley
p.s. Dragonfly would have topped my favorite list. I was surprised to see it at the bottom of yours.

We're seriously... (Reply to this comment)

going to have to agree to disagree on this one. A Walk to Remember was the biggest lump of you-know-what I've seen marked as a "touching love story" in quite some time. Nothing about it rung true (note--most "cancer" stories leave me cold because of their horribly innacurate portrayals) and I couldn't help but laugh (OUT LOUD!) and the bad dialogue.
But that's just me :)
In any case, I do agree about some other things here. I just had to be opinionated little ol' me for a moment.
Shelly.
