~=~ Interview ~=~
Reporter Bob: I'm on the streets of Manhattan with Angel Bear. Hand made by Vermont Teddy Bear Company, Angel Bear is built for comfort. Beautiful white costume, wings and halo help those in distress feel better. Angel Bear, in light of the attacks on September 11, what's your current mission?
Angel Bear: Well Bob, I've got a pretty tough job. There were some very brave people out here last week. As criminals took over airplanes and killed innocent people, rescue workers including firefighters and police officers raced to the buildings. Seeking to help those inside, most ended up making the ultimate sacrifice for their fellow humans. Without their help, many more may have been killed or injured. Not thinking of their own personal safety, they did their jobs. Now, it's my job to comfort their families. Vermont Teddy Bear Company is sending me and my bear friends to children of real life rescue heroes.
Reporter Bob: That's great Angel Bear! I see Firefighter Bear and Police Bear waiting patiently in their boxes, ready to go to work. Hey, can you guys give me an update on where you're going?
Police Bear: That's OK Bob. You don't have to take me out of my box. I can talk through the air hole. I heard I'm going to a family of two children who lost their father. Another child will be joining them in a couple of months. It's a tough job but I'm up to the challenge. My soft fur helps me do my work. And my uniform will remind them to be proud of their father.
Firefighter Bear: I don't really have time to talk Bob. I'm on my way to a little girl who misses her Dad very much. I'm being express shipped right now...
Reporter Bob: Thank you bears for talking to me. And good luck with your healing mission! This is Reporter Bob, signing out.
~=~ What to do? ~=~
Last week was rough. Many of us were shell shocked by the events of September 11. Our disbelief progressed through predictable stages: numbness, horror, anger, questioning and grief. Now, many of us want to act. Donating blood, giving cash and acting to heal local tensions are wonderful ways to be useful. Some children are making patriotic pins and ribbons to wear. I've seen some groups of children making cards for grieving families. Just today, I found a website where you can send a message to those directly affected by the tragic attacks.
It's www.vermontteddybear.com. The site sells very high quality, cute as a button, bears. The bears are delivered in a wonderful box, complete with personal message and some candy. But the reason I noticed the Vermont Teddy Bear Company site today is what they're doing to help families hurting from the attacks.
Here's the text from the site:
The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is donating Angel Bears, Police Bears and Firefighter Bears to all the families and children of the courageous firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers who lost their lives saving others.
We would like each of the 500 bears to come with personal messages from all of you all over the country. There is no charge for this service. All messages will be printed and will accompany the bears. We invite you to share your love and strength -- and let them know that we will never, ever forget our heroes.
~=~ Great corporate citizen ~=~
The Vermont Teddy Bear Company is a great example of many corporations coming together to do what they can to help. Construction companies donated equipment. Nike donated socks & other clothing along with money. Many companies, like Intel, have matching funds for employee donations. They add the employees' money to their significant corporate donation. The Vermont Teddy Bear Company makes bears. So they're sending bears. I am impressed by the companies that have risen to meet this tragedy. So many helping, each in their own way.
You can go to the vermontteddybear.com site and send a message. The company will deliver your message, along with a sweet bear, to the families of lost rescue workers. There is no charge for you to give this sympathy gift to the heroes' families.
~=~ Teddy Bears ~=~
Vermont Teddy Bear Company makes a great bear. Guaranteed for life, you can order them in different fur colors and costumes. Choose from special occasions, occupations, get well and celebrations. VermontTeddyBear.com has quite a selection. Ever seen a pregnant toy bear? Send one to a friend who's expecting. How about a clown care bear or a cheerleader? I never knew there were so many kinds of bears. For some bears, you have choices of fabric colors for their removable outfits. The only hard thing about using this site is choosing just one bear!
I sent one of these bears to a relative in the hospital. It came in a box with airholes, so the little guy could "breathe". The cute box even had a game inside. The patient and all the visitors were thrilled with the bear. I was surprised that it was jointed, with arms, legs and head movable. When a loved one is in the hospital, delivery timing is important. This bear was delivered on time, to the right place, at the right time.
~=~ Down sides? ~=~
It's an old cliche, but "You get what you pay for." These hand made bears aren't inexpensive. The prices I clicked on range between $49 - $79. The Angel Bear is $79. Delivery runs another $10 with special delivery options costing even more. If you like these bears, try repeating the mantra, "You get what you pay for." It may help when the credit card statement comes.
~=~ Bottom Line ~=~
I like what Vermont Teddy Bear Company is doing for the children of those involved in last week's tragic attacks. Good corporate citizens deserve our support. If you need a beary sweet gift for someone, check out vermontteddybears.com. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
