| becky5653's Full Review: Instead Feminine Protection Cup |
I decided to try Instead because I recently have been having heavier periods and didn't want to be always changing pads or tampons. (I was soaking through a tampon with a pad in 2 hours on my heavy days) Plus I really like the idea of not filling up the landfill with them. I have been looking at reusable cups, but I didn't want to invest money into them if I was unable to insert them. (I've always been a little nervous about inserting tampons) So I bought Instead to see if I could do it. I read through the instructions, took a deep breath, and tried it. The instructions said to sit on the toilet and insert it pointing down, not up like a tampon. I was surprised when it went right in. I thought it was going to hurt because the ring is springy, but it didn't. It was slightly uncomfortable when I was putting it in, but not bad. I did have to push firmly to get it into place, but once it was in I didn't feel it at all. I was surprised that I got it right the first time. I was expecting to have to try it over and over again to get it right. I wore it for 2 hours with no leaks, then I decided to change it, since I had no idea how long I could go. To remove it you have to put your finger in your vagina and feel for the ring. I had a hard time reaching it, I have short fingers, so I tried "bearing down" and then I was able to hook it with my finger. I pulled slowly and firmly, while still bearing down, and it came out. But it made a sucking sound when it came out and leaked all over my hand. And I was pulling straight out, while sitting on the toilet. This has happened every time I have removed it. I will definitely not change it in a public restroom! I learned to have a squirt bottle ready so I wouldn't have to waddle to the sink with my pants around my ankles to rinse my hands off before I could insert a new one. Another reason not to change it in a public restroom!! (I should mention that my O.B. told me that my cervix is tilted to the side. So that could be the reason for the noise) This is my second day using it and the longest I have gone without changing it is 6 hours. -But that doesn't mean that I couldn't have gone longer. I have yet to go so long that it leaks before I change it. I haven't had any trouble with leaks when laughing or sneezing. I did notice that it leaks when I use the toilet, but according to the website, that is normal. I recommend wearing a panty liner though, because after you stand up and it seals again, there is still that little bit extra that comes out and spots. Maybe everyone doesn't have that experience, but I do. I am pretty happy with it over all, but I am going to look into a reusable one since I don't like the "throwing away" part of it.
