My listNov 08 '04 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line It's just opinion. My list is dominated more by the classics. Dracula (1931) Nosferatu was the original but this was better. Lugosi was terrifying. Frankenstein (1931) How can you feel sorry for the monster and still fear him? A timeless classic. Often emulated, but never matched. The Mummy (1932) The recent remakes were slicker and had much better special effects but certainly were not as suspenseful. The Werewolf of London (1935) The original and best of the werewolf flicks. The Wolfman (1941) almost makes my list but not quite. I saw it in the theater as a kid and spent the night hiding under my bed. There were 4 excellent werewolf flicks release in the early 80's that were all excellent as well. The Howling, American Werewolf in London, Wolfen and Steven King's Silver Bullet. None was as good as the 1935 original. The Thing (1951). The remake relied way too much on special effects and explicit language and didn't hold a candle to the ultra suspenseful original. Curse of the Demon (1957) Also released as "Night of the Demon" at the same time in England. Dana Andrews was excellent in this very frightening flick. The Exorcist (1973) This could have been the best ever horror flick except for the flagrant and unnecessary gross profanity which did little to frighten the audience as much as it repulsed us. It's number two on my list regardless. The Alien (1979) The best sci-fi horror movie ever. The Shining (1980) The best screenplay of any of Stephen Kings works. Nicholson was at his best. Angel Heart (1987) Maybe the scariest movie ever. DeNiro and Rourke play off each other like fine instruments. |
