Buying on Abebooks.com is convenient, simple, and quick.
The site is very user-friendly.
Books can be searched in many ways.
By:
Title
Author
Keyword
ISBN
There is even an advanced search feature that allows you to narrow down a search by publisher, publication date, price, seller's country, binding type, and special attributes such as first edition, dust jacket, or signed copy.
Pretty awesome, really.
I've used Abebooks.com since 2000. I've always had a good experience, never any issue to speak of.
But this time, the buying experience was very disappointing, and the customer service experience was doubly so, as I received no assistance from Abebooks whatsoever.
I ordered two books from the same seller in October. The seller is supposed to acknowledge and ship books within 2 days. The seller didn't acknowledge the sale for 4 days (I figured they must have been out of town, no big deal.)
The books were being sent Media Mail so I figured on a week or so for delivery. A week went by, no book; another week, still no book. Almost another week, and here comes a package. A small, skinny package- because there is only ONE book in it! On the packing slip inside, it says the other book was sent a week earlier... So, I e-mail the seller. I get a e-mail confirmation, but a month later no response. So I e-mail the both seller and Abebooks. Another e-mail confirmation comes back but nothing else for nearly another month. One more try e-mailing Abebooks. One more confirmation and nothing more for another week.
So, then I contact my credit card company and file an online complaint for the cost of the missing book.
Apparently Abebooks didn't bother to reply to them either. I got my refund within the week.
So, while it seems most the sellers are reputable, be very aware that if you happen to find one of the few who are not, you are on your own.
If you do choose to use Abebooks, use your credit card. At least someone will be on your side.

Checking the Better Business Bureau website, there are two listings for Abebooks.com.
One only dating back to 2006 gives Abebooks a satisfactory rating, but the other dates back to 2004 and rates them unsatisfactory due to their failure to respond to all their complaints... surprise, surprise.
