When I saw the trailer for this movie and read the back of the dvd box I was hoping for a film that was similar yet different from the Notebook. At the end of the movie I was left feeling disappointed. While it did draw me in and capture my curiosity, it also left me frustrated. The plot was very much like that of the Notebook but I felt like this movie focused more on the realities of growing old with Alzheimer's disease rather than the romance and passion between the couple. The Notebook while sad because the lovers died at the end was still joyful because it celebrated the commitment and unconditional feelings involved in true love. Away From Her, on the other hand, portrayed a couple that was in fact truly in love, but showed the heartbreak of losing your love to Alzheimer's on a deeper level. I truly believe that the depiction of the wife's relationship with the other man in the nursing home is very realistic (I know this from personal family experience with Alzheimer's), but sometimes fantasy is better than reality. I wanted so badly for the couple to hold fast to their love until the very end, but I felt very betrayed and disappointed when the wife was not loyal to the relationship. Overall, the movie was very emotionally moving and a good wholesome movie. If you are looking for a movie that makes you feel happy and giddy this is not the one for you.
