The Bottom Line This summer, from the producers of "That '70s Show", comes a story...

I don't remember exactly how I came across whisperscream's write-off. But, I jumped at the chance to participate because it offered me the opportunity to talk about one of my most favorite subjects: Well, two favorite subjects. Me and music. But, since all I review is music anyway, and I like talking about myself, I figured it was a chance to be all self-indulgent and not be blasted for it.

But, after giving his list a read-through, I realized that the list isn’t necessarily about songs that define YOU, but songs that epitomize certain things. So, with that in mind, here’s my entry:

Opening Credits: Life Story by Angie Stone. For the title, if nothing else.

Waking Up: Get Up by Amel Larrieux. As indicated by the title, a pretty good-wake up song, both literally and figuratively.Somethin’ to get ya thinkin’ first thing in the morning. 6:00 AM, getting out of bed again. Can't get back in, ‘cause sleep ain’t gonna pay the rent.”

Average Day: Video by India Arie. Celebrating the virtues of being an around-the-way, ordinary, down-to-earth person.

First Date: Once Around The Block by Badly Drawn Boy. A song that summarizes the feelings of anxiety and nervousness that can persist on the first date.

Falling In Love: So Into You by Tamia. For some reason, I’m thinking Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” video, without the Mariah Carey. Just a story of two kids at summer camp, falling in love and enjoying it.

Love Scene: Moments In Love by the Art Of Noise. Ten-minutes of pure baby-making music, with very little vocal interruption. Besides, when you’re in the throes of passion, who give a crap about words? Just as long as the music itself sets the mood.

Fight Scene: Move by Ludacris f/ Mystikal & I-20. Just makes me wanna shove somebody, punch ‘em in the throat or something.

Breaking Up: Can U Help Me by Usher. Trying to buy a woman’s affection with gifts, and then being confused as to why she’s still not happy isn’t anything new when it comes to love song topics, but Usher makes it sound so damn authentic and heartfelt.

Getting Back Together: I Still Love You by 702. A slow, minimalistic, maybe even futuristic slow-jam all about getting back together with that person who you realize was all you ever really needed.

Secret Love: I’m In Love With You, by Angel Grant featuring Stevie Wonder. A really sweet song about confessing your love to someone. “If I erase a little bit of your doubt, would you relax and stop trying to figure me out, and enjoy this feeling like I do? Well okay, I’ll say it… I’m in love with you.”

Life’s OK: Breezin’ by George Benson. Easy living at its best. Just being alive, and happy to be alive.

Mental Breakdown: Losin’ My Mind by En Vogue. One of the few worthwhile songs on their latest album, “Soulflower”. The title says it all. To further illustrate the descent into madness, there’s this sample throughout the song of some horns that sound like they were taken from an episode of Rocky & Bullwinkle.

Driving: A Horse With No Name by America. This song makes me think of driving on a rural road either in the Midwest or Southwest, windows (or if you’re in a convertible, the top) down, destination unknown, and unimportant.

Learning A Lesson: Junebug by Len. A song about taking a minute to look at your current situation (assuming that your current situation is one in which you are unhappy), and trying to see where you went wrong. “You went as far as it goes, as good as you can’t complain. But you’re still all alone, and it all still remains the same. Maybe it’s not the way and it shouldn’t have gone this far. Willingness and sudden greed made it all that much too hard.”

Deep Thought: A Little Deeper by Miss Dynamite. Self-explanatory title. A song that contemplates life and love problems, encouraging you to “dig a little deeper within you”.

Flashback: Family Reunion by Jill Scott. Makes me think back to my childhood, right down to the lunatics for family members, and all the fun times we had.

Partying: Can’t Nobody by Kelly Rowland. Insomniac has this one on his list, but that’s okay. I forgive him. Definite party song. The go-go beat, courtesy of a Trouble Funk sample, makes me wanna get up and shake a li’l somethin’.

Happy Dance: Electric Boogie by Marcia Griffiths. If you don’t feel good after doing the Electric Slide, something is wrong with you.

Regretting: Emotional Rollercoaster by Vivian Green. A song of regret and helplessness.

Long Night Alone: I’m With You by Avril Lavigne. Perfect for when you feel lonely. And cold, too. Although, in the video, she’s wearing shorts. Go figure.

Death Scene: The Wreckage by Vanessa Carlton. Dark, short and to the point

Closing Credits: Life Goes On by Angie Stone. Leaving the hurt in the past, and taking the lessons learned as you continue toward the future.

And that would be it. Hopefully this was one of those movies that you enjoyed from start to finish.
