I was real happy when I got Digimon World Dawn for Christmas. As soon as I had the chance to play it I started to play it. The game was so fun I couldn't stop playing it. To learn more about this great game continue reading.
Story
The story starts with you the hero making it to the Digi-Coliseum late where the Normal Rank Tournament is taking place. The Group A champion has already been decided and its a member of the Night Crow group which are the rivals of Light Fang which is the group you belong to. Unfortunately another one of the Night Crow members has won two in a row in Group B, and its up to you to beat three members of Night Crow to become the Group B champ. After the tournament is over you all head back to Sunshine City which is where the Light Fang lives. After that you end up going to your tamer home so you can get some sleep. While you are sleeping a weird looking monsters breaks into Sunshine City and turns all the digimon back into digi eggs. Your Digimon end up turning back to rookies since you were in you tamer home and it has more security protecting it. After you stop the monster that turned all the digimon into digi-eggs you are asked to go investigate Login Mountain to see if there is anything evil there. From then on you have to take on quests from other digimon and once you complete a certain amount of quest you will progress through the story.
Gameplay
Like I said above the city you and your fellow Light Fang members is Sunshine City. This city and many other cities are all located in the Digital World. There are many different places to visit while in Sunshine City. One place you can visit is the tamer union which is where the Light Fang leader and the rest of the members do their jobs. There are also many shops you can buy items from in the town. The types of shops located in the city are the Equip Shop, Farm Shop, and Farm Goods Shop. There is also the building where you can take on quest from other digimon. Then there is the tamer home where of course you live. In your tamer home is a Digi-Lab PC and a Digi-Farm PC that you can only access in the tamer home.
To leave the city you have to go to Shine terminal and step on the blue gate so the World Map will be displayed. Each dungeon is marked with a red dot which means you can go there. When you put the cursor over the dungeon you want to go to information about that dungeon will appear above it. It tells you which digimon species you will find while in the dungeon.
The battle system in this game is just like the Pokemon games. The battle system is turn based and the game has random encounters just like all the other Pokemon games. When you end up running into a digimon the battle screen will be displayed. The top screen shows the action order on the left and below it shows the digmon that is next to go. Most of the right side is taken up by information of your digimon in your party. Below the information is a miniature diagram of the battlefield. The bottom screen is where the battles actually take place. The enemy digimon are displayed in the middle of the bottom screen and the active digmon is displayed in the left bottom corner. The battle menu takes up most of the right side of the touch screen. To win a battle you have to reduce the enemy digimon's HP to 0. The battlefield is actually divided into 5 blocks for both sides and each of the digmon's attacks have a set location where they can be used. At the beginning of each battle you automatically scan the data of the enemy digimon that you are fighting. Once you have scanned 100 percent of a digimon's data you can go to the Digi-Lab and digiconvert them into actual digimon. The enemy digimon are usually easy and they gradually get harder once you get to harder areas. The bosses usually take a while to knock out and they can be hard sometimes.
When you defeat all the enemy digimon on the battlefield the battle is over. Once you win a battle you will receive species experience which is the experience for the defeated digimon's specific species. You will also receive some bits which are the types of money you use to buy things at the shops.
While on the field map you can open the main menu by pressing either the START button or the X button. There are many options on the main menu these include - Digimon, Items, Quests, DigiFarm, Tamer Info, and Save. When you choose the option Digimon the screen changes to display your digimon party on the bottom screen and on the top is a picture and the status of the selected digimon. Most of the stats are easy to figure out but a few aren't as obvious like the Aptitude. The aptitudede number is the highest level the digimon can get to before they stop leveling up. To up the aptitude number you have to degenerate the digimon, but it occasionally increases when your digimon digivolves. Each digimon has a set of techniques it uses to fight other digimon. To find out what techniques your digimon has just select the digimon you want and then select Technique from the circle of options.
Digimon are classified by Species and techniques are classified by attributes. There are a total of eight species of digimon in the game. Just like I said before when you win a battle your digimon will earn different types of species experience depending on the species of the enemy digimon you beat. You can check how much Species experience you digimon has by selecting the digimon you want to check and select S.XP from the circle of options. Each digimon also has either one of two traits of their own and to check them just select the digimon you want to check and then select Traits from the circle of options. You can also check the digivolution route of your digimon by selecting the digimon you want to check and then select Digivolution Route from the circle of options. You can either digivolve or degenerate your digimon but of course they have to meet certain conditions before you can do it.
You can also equip your digimon with weapons and armor to make them stronger. To equip a item to your digimon select the digimon you want to equip it to and then select Equip front the circle of options. Another option on the main menu is Quests which displays the current quest you are. Then there is the DigiFarm option which allows you to check the status of your farm check all the digimon you have and lets you check all the farm goods you got on your farm. The next option is Tamer Info which of course holds information about you as a tamer. It keeps track of how many digimon you have collected, the percentage of quest completion, how many digimon you have defeated, the top damage you have dealt in a battle, the highest level you have, and how many friends you have. It also records data of how many digi eggs you have and have hatched and created. The last option on the main menu is Save which of course allows you to save your game.
Now I will talk more about the Digi-Lab PC which you can only access while at your tamer home. Like I said before the Digi-Lab PC allows you to digiconvert, digivolve/degenerate, and special digivolve. There are two options under special digivolve and they are DNA Digivolution and Armor Digivolution. In DNA digivolution you basically combine two digimon together to make a new digimon that you can get with normal digivolution. Only certain specific digimon can be used as partners in DNA digivolution. Then there is Armor Digivolution which lets you digivolve a digimon using a Digi-Egg. There are eight types of Digi-Eggs that you can receive through quests and even from treasure chests.
Now I will talk more about the Digi-Farm PC you can only access while at your tamer home. The Digi-Farm is where you can leave your digimon to train them without having to use them in battle. You can put up to four digimon on the farm at once. You have to end up buying farm goods for your farm so they can train and eat food. It is real important to put food in the farm so that should be one of the first things to buy for the farm. You can also buy terrain boards to put on the digi farm so it would look cooler. There are many terrain boards to choose from and depending on the terrain board you choose it increases species experience for certain species.
Controls
The the control pad moves the character and the A button is used to talk to people and digimon. The A button is also used to advance conversations, open treasure chests, climb ladders, and use gates. The Start or X buttons are used to open the main menu. The control pad is also used to select a menu item. The A button is also used to confirm selections, and the B button is used to go back. The X button is used to sort lists in menus, display digivolution menu in the digivolution route option, and exchanges party digimon while in battles. The L and R buttons are used to switch pages while in menus and used to switch party digimon in digimon details. When using the touch screen you just need to tap the option you want to choose.
Sounds
The sound in this game is pretty good for a DS game but I have heard better sound in other games. The music is actually good enough to listen unlike other games which you would rather keep the sound down. There isn't much sound in the battles except the background music in the battles. Just like most other Nintendo handheld games there are no voice overs at all.
Graphics
The graphics in this game are pretty good for a game based off a cartoon show like the pokemon games were. These graphics are good but not as great as some other DS games. They tried to make a little animation for the attacks but they didn't go over well. The digimon are real detailed and so are the surroundings. The people don't seem as detailed as the digimon though.
Overall this game is real great and fun. I recommend this game to fans of digimon if there are still any out there and I also recommend this game to people who like the pokemon games since the gameplay is similar.
