The Bottom Line My top 10 changes depending on my mood, but usually they will appeal to my love of the effectiveness and function of music in films
Being a musician, I'm always "seeing" with my ears. In Films soundtracks leap out at me. The first soundtracks that come to mind are Wendy Carlos's treatment of Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange". The use of Beethoven's 9th is part of the main characters personal makeup. "It was my own Ludwig Van"...I believe the quote goes, as the characters one redeeming feature is his love of music. Kubrick's use of music in "2001:A Space Odysee" is profound, though I'm not sure what the score's message is. Fact: Kubrick juxtaposes Johann Strauss (a minor composer in academia) against Richard Strauss (a serious composer in academia). I have no clue as to what this signifies. Fact: The Richard Strauss piece is titled in English, "Thus Spake Zarathustra". Zarathustra according to most history professors introduced the idea of monotheism. This piece is about the proclamation of Zarathustra that there is one God. If I recall this is heard upon the earliest historical depiction of weapon use in the context of the film. Those are my first 2 in the top 10. I'll add the score for the movie Rushmore by Mark Mothersbaugh (formerly of Devo). I love the crisp, neo-baroque style. Full of light hearted energy and youth. So that's 3. For no. 4, the soundtrack of "The Royal Tennenbaums", also composed by Mark Mothersbaugh is softer a tad more mature, to go along with the softer look of the film and the maturity of the film. No. 5..the Soundtrack from "The Wizard of Oz"...love the individual pieces for individual characters and places. No. 6...the Soundtrack from "Pirates of the Caribbean"... Basically harmonic variations of the music from the ride, with different melodic lines, and variations of the compound rhythm of the music from the ride. Easy to analyze and play and orchestrate by ear. Drink up me hearties Yo Ho!! No. 7... soundtrack to "Edward Scissorhands"..so hauntingly beautiful..stops me dead in my tracks every time. No. 8...soundtrack to "Field of Dreams"...another hauntingly beautiful work. No. 9 Soundtrack from "Close Encounter of the Third Kind", love the use of music and methods of educational methods to convert music into a form of communication. No. 10 ...the soundtrack from "Still Crazy"..at my age, it's reassuring to know "The Flame Still Burns". |
