| maagk's Full Review: George Foreman GR82B Indoor Grill |
Last year when the price of natural gas shot up I decided that my nice new large gas oven was going to have to sit it out. My family consists of only my husband and myself, and I was looking for economical small appliances that could do the job of my large ones and therefore save me money on my gas bill. I looked at many of the rotisseries on the market. What convinced me to purchase this particular one, the George Foreman Jr., was that I purchased it on QVC as a Today's Special Value, about $79 and it was on easy pay, 2 payments of $39 and some change, what a great deal! This was in November of 2000 and it has had quite a 'workout' in our house. My husband was quite skeptical of this new 'toy' and thought that it would be another small appliance to take up counter space and never be used. He is SO far from wrong. I have used this rotisserie at least twice a week since it was purchased in November and cook everything from chicken, both whole and chicken breasts, to fish, to pork ribs and chops, to steak and more. It makes steak just wonderful, juicy and flavorful. We use this so much that our outdoor gas grill has not been used at all this summer, well maybe once. It also has the health benefit that the fat drips away into a collection tray and you can toss it out. To continue, we had a small dinner party over the holidays and I baked 3 Cornish game hens in it, all done to perfection and my guests raved about them. I have yet to find something that does not taste great after using the rotisserie. The compact size of this oven takes up minimal counter space, and can accommodate up to a 13lb turkey. I have not personally tried turkey yet, but plan to do so in the near future. Food does not dry out when cooking and even food that has to be left in longer to wait for someone arriving home late, does not get dried out and leathery. It does not heat up your kitchen as would you large oven, but it will heat up objects or cabinets if placed too close to the rotisserie. It does state that foods cook in less time, but I do not see a significant difference in cooking times, maybe a little less. Cleanup is ok. Although the manual did not say that the removable parts are dishwasher safe, I did put the baskets and trays in the dishwasher and they came out almost as clean as if I had hand scrubbed them. If you do not have a dishwasher with a pot scrubber, I would suggest soaking them for a while before scrubbing the baskets. I also found that using a round veggie brush was the easiest for hand scrubbing. The accessories included with my rotisserie are a flat basket, this is used for steaks, chops, burgers etc. (this is the basket that I used the most); a round basket to make guilt free french fries ( downside to the fries are that they take 45 minutes)and shish ka bob skewers(great for country style pork ribs). Also included were heavy duty oven mitts, necessary to remove the cooked product from the rotisserie and a plastic stand, to hold the rotisserie arm upright so that you can remove the meat, etc. I would highly recommend this rotisserie, mine is in use all the time.
