English Made Easy

Written: Sep 23 '01
Pros:It is a great reference and easy of follow.
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: If you need to improve you English no matter the reason this book is worth it.

ERRORS IN ENGLISH and ways to correct them is a simple book to better your English. Harry Shaw has used a quick-Reference guide to correct the usage, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and pronunciation. He also includes a dictionary of terms in grammar and composition.

PART 1:
This section is dedicated to the proper use of words. It is set up like a dictionary but it is only words that are improperly used. Words that more then one meaning. Also includes phrases used in the English language or missed used.

PART 2:
This is the guide to correct sentence structure. Shaw goes into the problems in sentence structure and how to solve these problems. He tells us how to solve awkwardness, wordiness, choppy sentences, and a lot of the common mistakes. He explains how to begin and end a sentence. And this is just a few of the things discussed in this section. To tell you the truth he would probably shriek at my sentence structure.

PART 3:
Deals with correct spelling. Shaw gives us ways to spell those most misspelled words. Those words that are hard to decide which form of the word to use. He discusses the vowels that are added, dropped, and unstressed.

PART 4:
This is the guide to correct punctuation and mechanics. Here is where talks about every punctuation from periods to commas, to dittos. Commas were always my toughest decision. But her includes it all here in this chapter.

PART 5:
This is the guide to grammar, composition, and dictionary terms. This includes grammatical terms, general terms, and definition of terms. The dictionary of terms explains everything about words from tense to voice.

PART 6:
The guide to pronunciation. Just what it says it gives you everything you need to know to pronounce any words. No matter what language, how hard, or how long the word should be.

APPENDIX:
Literally shows the diagram of sentences. This is the road map untaken by most of us. Maybe some of us can vaguely remember taking a sentence and dividing it into diagrams. Well that is what this section reviews.

The thing that makes this book above so many other books of this type. Shaw makes it easy and simple. This is a great book for anyone that is taking English from grade school to college. And even us struggling writers that English is not the greatest in the world.
