Bought my wife a 2006 325i a year and a half ago. She wanted something more luxurious than her Subaru 'golf cart' with 125K miles.
Within a few days of purchase a sensor in the fuel system failed causing a check engine warning light. This problem was quickly resolved by the dealer by replacement of a sensor.
Within a few weeks the engine developed a chirping sound when started. Originally thought it was a belt and that it would work itself out. The engine was successfully repaired after a number of trips to the dealer. From what I understand the 2006 3.0L engines had a concern with lifter and/or cylinder head failure. BMW has confirmed this concern is isolated to the 2006 models.
Run flat tires seem to vibrate once and a while but smooth out after a few minutes of driving. Don't mind this knowing you'll never get a flat tire. At 12K miles the tires are not showing signs of wear.
Other than these concerns, it is a good car. My wife enjoys the style, handling, and power. Cup holders and cruise control are somewhat strange but work. Blue tooth phone feature works really well. Fortunately we've opted for the 6 year 75K mile maintenance and warranty program. If there are ongoing engine concerns we'll probably have to get rid of it by then.
We were considering trading our other vehicle, a 2003 Toyota, for another BMW but we're going to wait and see.
