The Bottom Line No rain-drops on roses here. Just my list of things I could not live without.

While procrastinating and wandering around Epinions, I stumbled upon hughesfm’s write-off" on the ten things you cannot live without. It seemed to perfectly suit my need to put off real work, so I decided to give it a shot.

I’ve listed these ten things in no particular order, just as they came to mind. I also tried to limit the amount of abstractness to my choices and not choose general things like family and friends. So without further ado: the list.

1) My wallet
I know, it’s rather boring and predictable but it is true. I attach all of my keys to my wallet on the theory that I am less likely to lose either of them. That does mean I’m really screwed if I lose it, but that’s the chance you take. The keys portion of my wallet currently includes my house key, the keys to my parent’s houses, and the keys to my car (car keys are probably most important because there is only one copy of the one that starts the ignition, I just don’t have the $75 to get a copy made). Inside my wallet is my driver’s license, barbri ID, voter id, credit card, insurance card, thing from ACLU that says what to do if you’re stopped by the police, Safeway club card, old school id, county library card, AAA card, Westlaw account card, business card for a person that I was supposed to contact but never did, and my ATM card. Plus a little cash, but it is so small that it doesn’t really matter.

2) My laptop
Actually, I might value this more than my wallet. When the fire alarm went of in class a couple weeks ago, I grabbed my laptop before I left but I actually left my wallet. I think that is because my laptop has more objective value. I paid quite a bit for it and all of the work I have done in law school is on it (and yes I have backups for it, I’m not that stupid (anymore)). I use it for school, for personal communication, and for entertainment. There really isn’t a day that I do not use it.

3) Blistex
Now, we are getting into more silly things. I have a small Blistex addiction. I got a lot better at weaning myself off of it in the summer but now that winter is approaching, the habit is coming back. I have about 5 tubes of it in order to have one available at all times. I hate chapped lips and although people tell me that Blistex only makes it worse, I don’t care. I need it.

4) Cable TV
These days most TV worth watching is on cable, specifically Comedy Central and Bravo. I need my Daily Show and my West Wing reruns. These are the two default channels that I usually go to when I turn on the TV. I would also want to watch Arrested Development, but hopefully I could just catch them on occasional marathons on FX.

5) My Fellow Democrats
I’m going to get a bit sappy here. There is nothing better than people you can relate to, especially at times like these. When you feel down, one of the best things you can do is turn to your friends. It’s even better when your friends have the same beliefs as you and are working towards the same goals. It is really great to know that there are people out there that are devoted to making the world a better place and I don’t know what I’d do without them.

6) Chewing Gum
Another addiction of mine. I know it is tacky and obnoxious looking, but I chew gum anyway. There are some good reasons for this. I notice that I chew on my pen when I don’t have something else in my mouth. I think that is more disgusting than chewing gum. It also keeps me from stuffing my face with food often. Plus, it helps with bad breath, which I sometimes need.

7) Tweezers
This is going to sound weird. I don’t even use my tweezers all that much. It’s just one of those things that when you need it, it is really annoying when you don’t have one. Plus I have this thing where when I can’t find my tweezers, I feel like my life is a mess and I have lost control. I don’t know why, that’s what happens.

8) A Good Pillow
One of the best feelings in the world is waking up on a cold morning, realizing that you don’t have to get up yet, digging down into the covers, and sinking your head into a pillow. When you are tired, nothing feels better than a good pillow. And the quality of a pillow makes the difference between a good night’s sleep and a bad night’s sleep.

9) Hooded sweatshirt
I’m one of those people who is always cold. A hooded sweatshirt is the perfect solution to this. A sweatshirt makes you feel cozy but the hood gives it that little extra that makes the garment. I prefer one with pockets because then it acts more like a jacket. I always need a hooded sweatshirt that isn’t in the wash so I have three on a rotating cycle.

10) Libraries
Libraries are one of the best features of modern society. Where else can you go and take something home for free on promise to bring it back? I love reading and when I was a child and going to the library was always a great thrill. This summer I was at the library at least once a week, trying to sneak in all the recreational reading I could before law school started. I would not be able to read nearly as much as I did if it were not for libraries.

Hopefully, this was somewhat amusing to read and not the average list you would expect.
