| mariahan's Full Review: Wilton Decorator Preferred Round Cake Pan |
This review will discuss the many available options and sizes of Wilton Decorator Preferred Round cake pans. It uses a specific pan/size as an example, but refers to the Wilton Decorator Preferred Round Pans (all sizes) as a whole, as the performance of these pans is consistent without relation to the size of the individual pan.
I became a Wilton cake decorating instructor a few years ago, and when I did, I upgraded several of my baking and cake decorating tools. One of the Wilton products that quickly became a favorite was the Wilton Decorator Preferred line of baking pans.
The Pans
A consumer can tell just by appearance that these pans are different from the typical baking pans sold by other companies and in most stores that sell baking equipment. Wilton Decorator Preferred pans are made of pure aluminum, the best material for baking cakes. Aluminum pans create cakes with a light golden brown cake surface, which is wonderful for decorating. The pans are also thicker than ordinary bakeware, and built to distribute heat evenly for more consistent baking. (Even though they may be thicker, aluminum is a lighter weight metal than other materials baking pans are typically made with, so these pans are very lightweight and easy to use.) Wilton Decorator Preferred pans also feature precise 90 degree corners for a precise look of baked cakes (required for wedding cakes.) Ordinary bakeware has rounded corners, producing cakes with rounded edges. The pans also have grip lip edges, extra wide-rims that make it easier to handle heavily filled pans. Other sizes and shapes of the Wilton Decorator Preferred line (sheet and square sized pans) are handwelded for detail and durability. Finally, the pans offer superior construction and performance and are guaranteed to last a lifetime.
These pans are lighter in color than pans made with other metals, or pans that are coated with a non-stick finish. While the non-stick finish may sound like a good thing, this coating typically wears off over time and/or is easily scratched. The Wilton Decorator Preferred pans retain their smooth, light silver finish even after years of use. They hold up extremely well (and are again backed up by a lifetime warranty) and perform exceptionally.
Available Sizes
Wilton Decorator Preferred round pans come in many sizes. Most bakers are familiar with 2 inch deep pans. These pans produce a single layer of cake. Wilton also produces 3 inch deep pans, which are used to bake deeper/taller cakes. For example, a baker can use these pans to bake taller layer cakes, or in some cases can bake a two layer cake in one pan. The baker can then slice or torte this single cake into two layers, using the Wilton Cake Leveler.
The 2 inch deep round pans come in these sizes and suggested retail prices:
6 inch (#2105-T-6122), $6.99
8 inch (#2105-T-6136), $7.99
9 inch (#2105-T-6137), $8.99
10 inch (#2105-T-6138), $10.99
12 inch (#2105-T-6139), $12.99
14 inch (#2105-T-6140), $17.99
16 inch (#2105-T-6141), $19.99
The 3 inch deep round pans are available in these sizes and suggested retail prices:
6 inch (#2105-T-6106), $8.99
8 inch (#2105-T-6105), $9.99
10 inch (#2105-T-6104), $11.99
12 inch (#2105-T-6103), $14.99
14 inch (#2105-T-6102), $17.99
16 inch (#2105-T-6101), $20.99
18 inch Half Round (#2105-T-6100), $23.99
Also, a 3 piece set of three different 3 inch deep pans (6, 10 and 14 inch) is sold as product #2105-T-6114 for $36.99.
Other Options
These pans are not limited to rounds. Wilton Decorator Preferred pans come in other shapes as well. They are also available in heart shapes, squares and sheets of different sizes. Also, a 9 inch diameter, 3 inch deep contour pan is available, an excellent choice baking pan for fondant covered cakes. The heart shaped pans are also sold as a set.
My Experience
I have several of the round Wilton Decorator Preferred pans, and the one I use most often is the 8 inch round pan that is 3 inches deep (#2105-T-6105). I use this pan to bake a two layer cake in one pan, using either a cake mix or from scratch recipe. When baking a two layer cake in two single layer pans, it must usually bake for about 25 minutes. When using this 3 inch deep pan, it bakes for about 50-55 minutes. The cake is cooled for about 10 minutes in the pan, then turned out onto a cooling rack to cool completely. When the cake has completely cooled, it can be cut into two layers, preferably using the Wilton Cake Leveler.
I particularly like baking the cakes in this pan and this manner, because it works extremely well for me. I also like having only one cake pan to wash instead of two when I use this pan.
Summary
I highly recommend the Wilton Decorator Preferred round cake pans because of their extremely high quality, performance of the pans, and lifetime warranty.
These pans are definitely preferred by this decorator!
