I only started using Firefox a month ago after the IE was disconnecting every 4 minutes. What a find that was. Haven't done many add-ons with it, but now I'll have some fun. Thanks a bunch for this excellent review!
Cheers,
Smorg :o)

I Love Firefox! (Reply to this comment)
by smartone86
I put IE in the recycling bin. I hate it with it's pop-ups and insecurites. Can you say Spyware? I'm telling everyone I know about Firefox. Since IE is in the recycling bin and Firefox is right on my desktop- the habit is broken.
As far as sites that don't work with Firefox, I use IEview,a great extension. I also like the extensions that allows me to view my local weather and control my mp3 player right on my browser.

The relationship between the code in "base" Mozilla and Firefox is somewhat complicated. A useful summary is in http://community.wvu.edu/~ast002/mozilla/qa.html

Love FireFox and MyIe2 (Reply to this comment)
by jckatz
If you love FireFox and sometimes HAVE to use IE (YUCK)
I suggested getting a wonderful IE Shell called MYIE2 (they charged the name) but I can't for teh life on me tell you what is it, but a google
http://www.myie2.com/html_en/home.htm
It has Tab Broswing, mouse gesters (YEAH!!), select and drag searching. FUN! and useful
Give it a whirl. I even donated, but it only asks once!

I've been concerned about security, so I've had this going since the summer. It really is a superior browser in many respects, and, geberally much faster that IE,
I have had a few configuration issues between it and my Zonealarms firewall/virus/privacy suite, but those have been manageable.
If enough people switch, maybe one of the following will happen:
1. AOL will let us use it instead of IE
2. Microsoft will devote enough resources to maiing IE safer.

I'm considering it. (Reply to this comment)

My partner hates, hates, hates, anything that has msn's fingers it in, and uses firefox all the time now. Me, I'm as not as much of a nerd as he is, so I tend to view it with some trepidation. Thanks for your review, it removed some of the mystery to it. --- Telynor

It's my understanding that Firefox was a complete new rewrite of the mozilla base.

Glad you're letting people know about Firefox (Reply to this comment)

I've been using it for quite a while and when for some reason I do have to use IE I get so annoyed that I don't have my Firefox tabs!
Firefox's built-in functionality & programming capability already does what Microsoft's Longhorn is supposed to do in 2006. It's going to be pretty interesting to see if Microsoft can keep up.

Nice review, but.... (Reply to this comment)

The Freeware Worth Writing About topic would have been a better place to put it, but it wasn't exactly crying out for an OT stamp. Just a few points on what you said:
"It is a totally new code base, designed to be better and faster than the older Mozilla and Netscape browsers."
Actually, Firefox is based on the Mozilla code base.
"Generally, some of the more annoying security exploits are not aimed at Firefox"
I think that's also because Firefox has fewer insecurity features programmed in.
I use Mozilla, but haven't as yet had reason to try Firefox....

Ready... aim... Firefox! (Reply to this comment)

Amy-
Your review was the voice in the wilderness, the one that finally made me download Firefox. After a day of use, I must say I'm really enjoying it. It seems to take the best bits of IE and Netscape, mash them together, and present them in a user-friendly whole.
One question: has anyone else lost the horizontal lines that separate the comments here at Epinions? Would you believe that this is my only Firefox-related complaint so far?

I'm going to try Firefox 1.0 today, and I'll let you know what I think after I've used it for a while.
