When I published the first 'Lean-n-mean' essay/invitation in November of 2002 I had no idea what to expect.
My intention was simple: to invite writers to challenge their 'inner-muse' to craft a 'helpful' product review that met an arbitrary word limit.
The initial challenge parameters were equally simple: any product, any category, whatever 'format' you cared to use.
78 product reviews were published in response to that first 'lean-n-mean' challenge. At an average length of 510 words, these 'very helpful' reviews were significantly shorter than the 700 words I measured for a small sampling of similar reviews published before that initial 'lean-n-mean' challenge.

In November of 2003 I repeated the challenge with 'Newbie' do be 'Lean-n-Mean'...Two. This second challenge focused the 'lean-n-mean' concept on newer users who were often writing their first reviews in the then-new 'express review' format.
While that focus on the new user failed miserably; 'Lean-n-mean Two' was spurred on by several users who took the idea to heart and wrote/published a number of 'Very Helpful lean-n-mean' reviews.
Indeed, the whole concept took on an aura of competition between members of the 'books' and 'movies' category in particular. We all know that competition drives a writer to produce her/his best work. Perhaps only King, Pratchett, Brown, etc. can dominate a market on name-recognition alone. Indeed, competition has allowed this website to survive and flourish while so many other dot com wonders/blunders have folded up their tents.
'Lean-n-mean Two' eventually drew over three hundred reviews. Seventy-plus members from more than a dozen categories published 171,265 words in 320 reviews. At an average of 535 words in length, this challenge exposed many writers to the challenge, creativity, and reward of writing 'lean-n-mean'.

'Lean-n-mean III' is officially closed effective Dec. 15
Some thoughts:
'Write-offs' have acquired a pejorative reputation for requiring a certain level of reciprocal 'reading and rating' by participants. 'Lean-n-mean' is not about 'you read mine, I'll read yours'. 'Lean-n-mean' is about having a place to collect and organize the efforts of those who accept the challenge of writing 'lean-n-mean'.
Write as many or as few (or none!) as you like. Challenge yourself to write a 'stealth lean-n-mean' review without worrying about having it listed here. If your review requires 1500 words, write that review. But challenge yourself to do it in 1480 or 1450 words if possible.
'Lean-n-mean' is not a 'click circle' or 'link jerk' or whatever the latest phrase is. Read-n-rate as many or as few as you want. Read-n-rate just one category if you want. Read-n-rate just one writer if you want. Read-n-rate only those reviews you come across in your normal Epinions activities. Read-n-rate just your own and admire your own brilliance if you want. (Wait...maybe you better not rate your own . . .wouldn't want to start something controversial...) Read-n-rate none if you want.
'Lean-n-mean' is about the business of this website: quality product reviews. 'Helpful' and 'Very Helpful' product reviews. 'Lean-n-mean' is not about 20-something essays, not about ghost stories, not about lovelorn poetry...sorry, only product reviews.
'Lean-n-mean' is about you. Doing what you are comfortable doing. No more, no less.
