I joined the PF in Danvers about a year and a half ago. I loved it. They had huge fans going during the summer, it was well lit and all the machines worked great. I heard that one opened up in Somerville, so since Somerville was about 10 miles closer than the Danvers one, I switched my membership. I soon realized it was dark, not air conditioned, the ceiling fans would be on, but they weren't producing any type of air flow or breeze. There were no changing rooms, only 2 tiny and 1 slightly larger bathrooms. The showers gave you no room to change and I often had to walk into naked women, when I just wanted to grab my stuff and go. Most of the equipment was still there, from when the gym was Worlds. I stuck it out for a while and tried to make the best of it. Parking was brutal if you weren't able to go when it wasn't busy. I stopped going mid to late 07. They finally moved across the street to the building attached to the closed cinema. I was all excited, new equipment, everything brand new actually. The bathrooms now had changing rooms and showers had an area right outside the stall to dry off and change. The lockers were made of mahogany and there were several bathrooms.
Pros:
It's right off the exit on my way home from work. It's cheap, only 10.00 p/month or 20.00 for a blackcard member. Membership (for blackcard) includes tanning and massage chair & you have the ability to take a guest with you to your location sign up gym (no others except where you signed up). There is a salon right in the gym.
Cons:
If you choose to take a guest with you, they have to not only sign in, but also show an ID. My 15 yr old daughter didn't have one with her, so they told her to take it next time. Had they told me that when I upgraded, we would have been prepared. The outer part of the parking lot is all reserved for other companies in the building, so you usually have to drive to the end of the lot, when it's busy (not such a good feeling when it's 5 degrees). Most of the treadmills are in front of the window, so when the sun is shining, you can't see the TV at all, from the glare of the light. They got rid of the good ab machines and now have ones that I can barely even use (I have heard complaints about this from several other people). The hot water was not working last week for a few days and then the water was totally off after that. The paper towel dispensers are about 5 ft high up on the wall and the cleaning solution is ON TOP of that. I am ONLY 5 ft tall, so it's next to impossible for me to stretch up and get it, without it falling over and hitting me in the head. I asked for a receipt for my reimbursement and last year, I got one page on their letterhead, signed by a manager, with the total amount paid. This time I got 2 pages of 20.00 p/month withdrawals including January and my reimbursement only includes up to December. Now I will have to play with the paper to get rid of January. They just installed a door by the front desk that you can use to get in, proceed to the left to use the locker room/bathroom and then you come out of the locker room, and head into the workout area, which is on the opposite side of the front desk. When you go back to the locker room upon exiting, you can't exit at the front desk, you now have to go all the way around, back to where you were working out and exit that way. It's just ridiculous. I wish I just stayed in Danvers where the machines worked, the paper towels were on the barrels, within reaching distance & I could get out the same way I went in ! I am not sure if I am locked into a year now, for upgrading, but if not, you can bet I won't be a member there much longer.
