Re: Luciano Serra pilota... (Reply to this comment)
by metalluk
Luciano Serra Pilota was surely a propagandist product, but it remains one of the best italian films in those years. If you pull down it only because Vittorio Mussolini was the director, you are a cretin.
If I were a cretin, I would take no shame in it, since thyroid gland problems are no reflection on one's personal worth. If you feel that name-calling is crucial to your point, you might try "ignoramus," since it reflects adversely on no group other than the intended one -- the ignorant.
Certainly there are examples of propaganda that are also high art (one thinks, for example, of the film Alexander Nevsky). Then, there are also examples of propaganda, such as Luciano Serra Pilota, that are excessively blatant in their propaganda intent as well as overly maudlin.

This is quite the list! I'm very impressed. It must have taken forever to compile. Thanks for the mention at the end there.
Cheers,

Thanks! I really thought hard about that review and read reviews at ciao of it too. It deserves a better chance. I also enjoy the rest of your list and think Grand Illusion slighted.

And thanks for the link :-) I was reading through it and came across my name and was shocked - pleasantly!
This is a terrific list and kudos to you for the shout-out to some of the best reviewers on the epinions site. It represents a tremendous amount of research and work.

That was a response to Stephen's message and relates to "Union Pacific" which is sometimes listed as the winner in 1939.

There is no review of the film presently at Epinions though it is in the database.
I'm not sure which film you're speaking of, since "Olympia" is reviewed by several people on Epinions, as is "Grand Illusion."

Several lists that I've seen of Cannes Palme d'Or winners do not list a 1939 winner. I have seen it on two such lists. I'm not sure why its status seems less certain than for the others. There is no review of the film presently at Epinions though it is in the database. I'll work on adding an entry for it.

I agree with Stephen (as I often do). OLYMPIA against GRAND ILLUSION would have been a close call. Both were prophetic, in their own way. The blond beasts had already mowed down those Polish cavalrymen, Riefenstahl had such fun with.
Over all a splendid list, metalluk, and an extraordinary accomplishment for you.
Congratulations.

1939 MIA (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
I checked back to see if you had incorporated some mention of the first (1939) winner. I need to watch "Olympia" again to see if it is superior to Ichikawa's "Tokyo Olympiad." Riefenstahl's masterpiece may not match Renoir's, but it is superior to at least 50 of the later Golden Palm winners (starting with "Union Pacific"). And, despite its official sponsorship, "Olympia" is considerably less focused on celebrating German athletes in the 1936 Olympics than NBC coverage of recent Olympics focuses on American ones. If "Olympia" has a star, it is not an Aryan "blond beast" but the African American track star Jesse Owens.

A great reference list here. I'm reluctant to admit to having seen less than ten of these. Shame on you for trying to broaden my horizons! :-)

The other one you mentioned, yes, but Olympia?! Nazi propaganda, yes, but also technically one of the most extraordinary films of all time, and hardly forgotten by cinephiles the world over...
Thanks for the comment. I've revised the wording.

Another phenomenal undertaking... Hats off. Also, your humility in deferring to a majority in La Dolce Vita by linking to another review than your own dissenting one, is exceptional and noteworthy, I believe.
entirely forgettable films, Olympia

Anyway, what's next as far as monumental projects go?

I think the movie If is badly represented by your link to red maple's 2 star review. It may be a shocker the first time you watch it, but I've watched it half a dozen times and enjoy it every time. My review's rating is 4 stars, I think, and by the way, Brits absolutely love the movie.

I was so looking forward to a review by you of Cecil B. de Mille's "Union Pacific," but this recaps quite an epic journey through some great and some far-from-great movies. Congratulations!

Corrections invited! (Reply to this comment)
by metalluk
My goal, here, is a useful index, with links, for Epinions users to the Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winners.
1. Any corrections of factual or typographical errors will be greatly appreciated.
2. Although I have seen all of the currently in-print non-English language films on this list, I have personally seen only about ten of the English language films. My brief descriptions were based on published plot synopses from a variety of sources. If you feel that I have misrepresented any of the films with links to reviews by Epinions writers other than myself, please let me know here in the comment section and I will revise descriptions accordingly, so that this index can be as useful as possible.
3. If one of your reviews has been referenced by a link and you object for any reason to having it linked, please let me know and I will revise accordingly.
