The Bottom Line Achtung baby

Thanks to sleeper54 and his Lean-n-mean III W/O, I can dig out those old tasting notes that were heading for obscurity.
This one is a local beer that I had while staying in Augsburg, Germany, a couple of years back.

Zum Goldenen Roß goes back to the 16th century but it was acquired by Sebastian Riegele in 1884 and is now the largest private brewery in Augsburg. They brew a range of beer, but this review concerns only one, Augsburger Herrenpils.

THEY SAY:
"Drei Gaben Aromahopfen garantieren die feinherbe Frische dieses Premium Pilseners, das seinesgleichen sucht."

Which loosely translates to:

Three gifts of aromatic hops guarantee the tasty freshness of this Premium Pilsener, which searches for its equal.

Meanwhile...

Unemployed for a while, A guy finally lands a job working for the local railway. One night he meets up with some friends in the pub who ask how the new job is.
"Brilliant," he replies. "The other day I was out working when I found a woman tied to the tracks. I untied her, took her back to my place for a cup of tea and we ended up making love all night. It was fantastic!"
"Yeah?" enquires one of his friends. "But was she good-looking?"
"Dunno," he sighed, "I couldn't find the head."

Back to the beer...

This beer pours a light yellow-turning-golden colour with a steady stream of bubbles rising to form a large and creamy, white head which dissipates quite quickly but leaves moderate lacing on the glass. A very typical-looking German pils.

The aroma is deep and malty with some faint grainy tones. There's a touch of grassy hops and a herbal, perfume-like note, with a little bit of dry, yeastiness, but overall, the aroma is fairly clean and quite subtle.

It's medium-bodied and quite highly carbonated but still retains a smooth mouthfeel. The taste is neither sweet, nor bitter - just balanced perfectly in-between. It has a biscuity quality and a grainy feel but this soon turns drier and slightly bitter midway. Again, lots of grassy, herbal tones before a lingering, slightly dry finish.

* The Verdict *

At 4.7% ABV, this is a decent enough, if unexciting pilsner. It's hard to pinpoint anything remarkable about it, but equally, it's difficult to find much fault either. Thirst-quenching and refreshing, it's an easy-drinking beer that hits the spot without over-taxing the taste-buds. As for food pairing, you could do a lot wurst than traditional German fare...I drank mine in the hotel bar while loading up on 'free' peanuts.

Would I drink it again? - A gentleman never tells...
