I have been a member of American Automobile Association for more than 25 years.
I frequently use the services of the local office as well as the online site www.aaa.com.
You can use AAA to book a car, hotel, flight and to make travel plans as well as emergency road service.
Over the years I have found the services invaluable. I have used AAA emergency road service when I locked my keys in my car, had a flat tire, a dead battery or needed my car towed.
Their TripTiks are especially helpful. They will prepare a custom document charting your course anywhere in the United States and Canada. The triptik is an easy to use booklet of detailed map sections and identify if there is road construction is being done.
They also provide international road and city maps.
Their tourbooks include hotels, motels and some restaurant information. I find the city and sightseeing information very useful when planning a trip.
If you don't want to go to the local office you can call or go to their website and request the travel information be sent to you.
You can even purchase foreign currency or a AAA prepaid money card. The prepaid money card is a reloadable debit card used for purchases and as an ATM card. It's protected like travelers checks. This is especially helpful for international travel. So if you are traveling to multiple currency destinations you can easily obtain the local currency from an ATM. The card balance and transaction information is available via the web. You can reload the card online or at a local office.
They offer a basic associate membership and plus membership.
The difference is the cost, the number of miles they will tow your vehicle and whether international maps
and tourbooks are included at no additional cost. Otherwise there is a small fee for these items.
I have given memberships as gifts to friends and family.
It gives me peace of mind to know I have 24/7 road service.
The "Show Your Card and Save" benefit of membership also provides discounts on insurance, services and tickets.
For example: airlines, train service, car rentals, restaurants, theme parks. There is a listing on the www.aaa.com website. Also, you should always ask if there is AAA discount.
