Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I totally get what your saying, hearing grief/pain in music somehow makes me feel less alone with mine.

Then again after listening to it, maybe not, but it is a damn good song with an empowering message reminding us to enjoy the little things we don't take a chance to think about the meaning of. I'm in a dark place right now and this song really brought me back. it always does....

just looking at your list and there are a few that I think are both fantastic songs and quite relevant. First off you have Lookout Mountain by a band called the Drive-By Truckers and of course the first song I think of on the subject is always Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.. One more is another R.E.M. song from the album Monster called Let Me In which is Michael Stipe's plea to his recently deceased friend Kurt Cobain.

Jesus is the Solution (Reply to this comment)
by godsolution
For those of you contemplating suicide, God is the ultimate answer, through Jesus Christ. Suicide is not the solution at all. Jesus is. I know it may sound foolish to some, but it is true. Try Jesus. He is more than the solution you are looking for. He is just a prayer away, and loves you.

from the 90's (Reply to this comment)
by scarlet_begoni
There is a song from the 90's, I only ever heard it once on the radio. It is a man talking about if he commits suicide that he won't have to wait in lines, & all this other stuff that he won't have to deal w/ if he's dead.
The other 1/2 of the song is him saying how he won't mind waiting in lines that they aren't so bad, & everything else that he would rather deal w/ than to be dead.
I could have some of this semi-wrong, but I was young when I heard this,
if you could find this tune, you will have ended my years of searching.

Trying to identify one from 1960/70s (Reply to this comment)
by raweden
Appreciated the write up. A friends dad committed just a months ago. It was a sudden event he was not prone. I always think one of the things those susceptable should try to comprehend is the hurt in causes in their 'friends' who will always want them there and want to help them.
Trying to identify a song from probably the end of the 60's or possibly early 70's. Had a chorus with words, 'Just another case of suicide, unjustified... ' Male vocalist pop song quite slow and one that has stayed with me. Can anyone help?

Song suggestion (Reply to this comment)
by amyh0127
You have made a wonderful list of songs. Most I've never heard before, but I will be researching them. One I felt you may not know about is "Where Angels Sing" by Meatloaf. It's not about the despair of suicide, but the relief it brings. I am not entirely sure that's why it was written, but that is my take on it and it's comforting.

it might be so that the title chosen for this comment is just as offensive as you might have tried to prevent...
I dont know for sure.. I do know this one thing: it took some guts to compile this list of S-songs..
so I'm just wondering... did it take one to know one?

Thanks for the list. Theres a lot more songs about suicide than I thought. I lost my husband to suicide just over a year ago and found myself listening to Numb and Last Resort a lot. I think they helped me to deal with my loss. Music has always been a big part of my life and helps me to heal.

Just found this thread and wanted to thank you for the songs and having the courage to talk about a subject like this. Well, and i have a couple of songs to add to your list if you don't mind. Some are semi-humorous (well, can be, at any rate), while others are more somber.
Funny? "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)" - Pete Droge
Serious- "I've Seen All This World I Care To See" - Alice In Chains
Seems to me.../ Serious- "Wise Up" Aimee Mann (Magnolia soundtrack)
'Nother seems to me.../ Serious - "If I Close My Eyes Forever"- Lita Ford & Ozzy Osborne
Depends on viewpoint- "My Way" Sex Pistols
Another that depends on viewpoint (for some reason it comes off to me as someone's last words to someone they're leaving behind)- "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" Mama Cass
Serious/ Kinda Religious- "Tourniquet" Evanescence
BTW- Both Sarah Brightman and Sarah McLaughlin have incredible versions of "Gloomy Sunday", but i wouldn't actually recommend that anyone listen to them unless they have someone supportive near. Had forgotten how powerful that song can be...
Hope you don't mind my additions to your list and Wish You Luck.

One of my favourite suicidal songs is "Alone I Break" by KORN. On the other hand songs like "Post War Dreams" and "Final Cut" by Pink Floyd are legendry while "Season in Abyss" by Slayer always manages to give me suicidal tedencies.

A friend (Reply to this comment)
by savinme
One of my closest friends has been very suicidal. He has a girlfriend and many friends but both of his parents have died and since then, he has been very depressed. I played him a song, Moments by Emerson Drive. That is a very powerful song as well as the list you have put up. Thank you for that list of songs.

my fave (Reply to this comment)
by matt_84_uk
Ive always found songs about suicide to be really emotional and my favourite has to be 'the priest and the matador' by senses fail. Its about someone jumping off a building. The start is the falling sequence and gets heavier when he hits the ground. Beautiful song I think. Your story touched me, I had a serious problem with depression a couple of years back and was admitted for fear of suicide. I always talked about it but not sure how serious I really was. My dad was always there for me when every1 else ran, and for that I will always owe him.

another sad story (Reply to this comment)
by coldsauce06
A good friend of mine took his life earlier this week. He requested "Home" by Chris Daughtry to be played at his funeral. Coming from someone who has contemplated suicide several times, think about the people you will be hurting when you leave. The song in a way was him letting us know where he was going.

Here's one a friend told me of... (Reply to this comment)
by todc
I just saw Mamma Mia with a friend (who's had a horrible past). The song is being song "The Winner Takes It All" by ABBA in the play and he's crying. He tells me that he took his lover to see Mamma Mia six years earlier for his lovers birthday. He bought him the musical soundtrack of the show. Four weeks later his lover kills himself. My friend after dealing with finding him, accused of the death, moves on in life. Later on while feeding the dog, half way down the dog food bag was the musical soundtrack cd that he bought. Written on it was, "Thank You for the Music" (another ABBA song, and circled was "The Winner Takes It All"...). How hearing that song after what my friend told me so changes how you look / hear something playing on the radio. My friend told me how if you ever wanted to leave a suicide note, that that song pretty much covers it all. How his life has torn at my heart...

you have a great list of songs, thank you for taking the time and making this list... Recently I heard a country song by Blaine Larson, called "How do you get that lonely". Excellent song with a good video. Also I did a google search and the top hit was the following link which has a huge list of songs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_about_suicide

looking for a song (Reply to this comment)
by zippy995
hi, I heard a song on the radio once, and it was this guy lecturing about suicide. He mentions that when things get hard for us we just kill ourselves, but if animals have a hard time they cant just give in, they have to live with it
Its a pretty slow song with a lot of good points. Thats really all that I can remember but I have been trying to find it for years now, if anyone can help Id really appreciate it. I first heard it about 5 years ago and havnt since. thx
