| mariahan's Full Review: Nick Bruel - Bad Kitty |
I recently read a review by one of my favorite Epinioners, kamel622, about a childrens' picture book by author Nick Bruel. And I thought, We love Nick Bruel, too! I must review the books we have by this author!
Having two elementary school-age children that still love to be read to before bed every night, I frequently add new picture books to our collection. At our school's book fair last year, we picked up Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel, and it has become a favorite read.
The book begins, She wasn't always a bad kitty. But one day, kitty's owners run out of food for the kitty. All that is left is asparagus, beets, cauliflower, dill, and other healthy vegetables, herbs, and legumes. For every letter of the alphabet, a not-so-appetizing (for the kitty, at least) option is given. Kitty was not happy. Not happy at all. That's when she decided she would be a BAD kitty. The alphabet is again used in a clever way, this time listing all the bad things kitty does, such as ate my homework, bit grandma, clawed the curtains, and damaged the dishes.
The owners return from the grocery store with quite a selection of foods for the kitty, again using repetition of the alphabet. Kitty can now enjoy an assortment of anchovies, buffalo burritos, chicken cheesecake, and a donkey named Dave, for example. As you can see, some of these clever alphabet concoctions are a little odd (why would a cat want to eat buffalo burritos, or a donkey, for example)? But what they make lack in sense they make up for in cuteness and style.
After kitty gets all of these new foods to enjoy, she changes her ways and decides that from now on, she will be a good kitty. She apologizes to grandma, buys new toys, cleans her cat box, etc., the book again listing all of these good things she does in alphabetical order.
The illustrations for this book are very clear, bright and colorful, reminding me a little of comic book illustrations. Kitty is illustrated convincingly to first look naughty, then well-behaved at the end of the book.
How can the owners reward such a good kitty? How about a new friend? The last two pages show that the owners have brought kitty a new friend, a puppy that kitty can share her food with.........do you think this will sit well with kitty??
My children and I enjoy reading this book over and over again. We enjoy kitty's antics, and we like the repetition of the ABCs. If you are looking for a new picture book to add to your collection, check out Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel!
