The Bottom Line: The Nurse Mate Seneca is an EXCELLENT working shoe at a really good price. The shoe offers great support, excellent clean up, and comfort!
I am a dialysis nurse which is by far the most physical of any of the nursing jobs I have had. It also means I am on my feet an average of 12 hours a day without much down time, and I am always looking for good shoes at a fair price, as I like to replace them about every 6-8 months. One of the other nurses on the unit got me turned onto the "Nursemate Seneca Shoe" and now we have just about the entire unit wearing this style!
This is a slip on style shoe, a fact that I REALLY like as I don't have to worry about laces coming undone during the day. I have bought shoes in the past that have the fold over velcro closures, and those have a tendency to look a bit geriatric, but this shoe actually has the look of laces down the front with none of the hassle.
The shoes are leather uppers that have a stain resistant finish (which is really important for nurses, I get a lot of blood stains on mine) and more important they have specially made rubber bottoms for slip resistance, as there always seems to be wet areas and spills of some type in a medical setting. I am sure they have saved me from a few tumbles on the floor, as in a dialysis unit, we always have water on the floors from the machines.
The shoes have a very athletic look, unlike many of the traditional "nurses shoes" that I have seen and worn in the past. These feel like a walking shoe and have excellent support which I need as I have some pretty low arches and night time foot pain from all the years of working on my feet! They have a nice heavy padded tongue and good firm insoles. When I first tried them on I thought they felt almost a bit too high in the arch, but after a day or two, they felt like a custom fit.
I was amazed at the price, I got these on the Shoeline.com web site and they were around 30.00 after I found a 10% off online coupon and also got FREE SHIPPING! To get a quality pair of shoes from a company like Nursemates for around 30.00, well, that's really a great deal! I have seen the same shoe looking around other medical sites on the internet selling for up to 20.00 more, so shop around for the best deal, search for coupons, and price the shipping costs.
Try these shoes! I think you will find them to be VERY good for most any activity that requires a good stable shoe, and with the athletic like style, most anyone could wear them as they could easily pass for gym shoes. The only decoration is the traditional small blue Nursemate heart (about a half inch in size) on the outer shoe near the opening. They would be great for cashiers or factory workers, or anyone on hard floors or walking all day!
Your feet and your budget will thank you!
