| xxxxer's Full Review: Nintendo NES |
In 1985, Nintendo brought the electronic game industry into the next era with the introduction of the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES. Introduced in Japan as the Famicon unit, the system instantly transformed the game system industry by giving gamers a versatile system with, at the time, revolutionary graphics. Overall, the system has held up pretty well, especially considering the thing is now over 15 years old, and is still my favorite game system of all time, no sh*t.
The thing that still makes this system the best of all time for me is the awesome line of titles available for the system. Nintendo probably had the most aggresive market for new games, and games were coming out all the time back in the late '80s and early '90s. These games were also the most varied and diverse collection of games for any system in my book. There were just so many games out there that you were sure to find one that you liked. And the other thing that stuck out about NES titles is that you'd really be hard pressed to find a decidedly "bad" game. Most games were incredibly fun to play, and although their graphics are nothing compared to today's marvels, they are not bad many times, and sometimes quite surprising and good.
Nintendo played a rather large role in my childhood. I got one of these things on Christmas 1989, and from that point on I was never bored at home again. I remember many a night spent up until the wee hours of the morning playing my favorite games with friends. Nintendo games were just the best thing to happen to kids in the 80s. They were simple enough that most of them you could almost beat just from renting them from a video store, and cool enough that they were a lot of fun to play.
The problem with the system is that they are VERY hard to find anymore. I recently endeavored to replace my unit, the original one my stepdad threw away(muthaf*cka!) and beleive you me, it was a lot of work trying to find a WORKING unit. I have about 80-100 games for the damn thing, so I really wanted to get a system, if for nothing else, for the nostalgic value of the system to me. I was able to find one online for around $30, and it actually worked when I got it home. The system was as cool as I remembered it, and I still would have to say that I enjoy playing NES games as much as Playstation's games.
My top 10 games(not neccessarily the top 10 best games, just the ones I like to play the most):
10. Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves--sort of an RPG based on the Kevin Costner flick, really well designed and diverse in its gameplay
9. Final Fantasy--The original is still probably one of the best, and one of the terrific RPG's that the NES supported.
8. Mad Max--one of my favorite movies spawned this fun game where you drive around a desolate future, fight bad guys in shoot-outs, and battle it out in the arena
7. Al Unser Jr. Turbo Racing/F-1 Built to Win--I used to be an avid race fan, and these two were probably tied for the best racing games on the system in my opinion. In each, you could build up your car and skill over time, making them a precursor to the career-minded games today.
6. Paperboy 2--Sequel to the classic original is even better. It's amazing how much detail the designers were able to create, as you can interact with just about everything. It's still fun trying to stop the criminals, break windows, and knock over that old couple on the swing.
5. Genghis Kahn-- Koei was probably the best designer overall for the NES, and they had a bunch of super-detailed RPG's out there. This is my favorite, as you choose a warlord and try to build an army and conquer the planet.
4. Gilligan's Island-- An undeniably fun game where you solve puzzles in "episodes" of the TV show. Colorful and entertaining, this is one of my personal favorites.
3. Super Mario 3--Perhaps the best game for the system. This has become the basis for this type of adventure game. Extraordinary game design, and a lot of secrets and fun.
2. Silent Service-- WWII submarine simulation where you pilot your sub on wartime missions to sink Japanese convoys. Exciting and strategic, I'll never forget trying to run silent under Japanese destroyers.
1. Friday the 13th-- You're in Camp Crystal Lake trying to destroy the perenial '80's maniac Jason Voorhees while keeping the kids you're watching safe. Still scary when Jason pops up out of nowhere.
There are so many good games for the system, I couldn't possibly name all the good titles out there. These are just a few of the games you'll usually find me playing on a rainy day.
