My toenails got screwed at the nail salon.

The Bottom Line Sometimes life is a piece of cake. Sometimes it just gives you toenail fungus.

All my life I have been diligent about my nail's cleanliness and appearance, both finger and toe. (After a highschool science project, I saw what junk is underneath our nails. We jabbed our nails into a petri dish and watched the cultures grow, ick!) I have become very adept at doing my own manicures and pedicures and keeping clean. The products I use are the best on the market and I always get a professional look that lasts and lasts. Still, many of my girlfriends have pestered me about never having had a professional salon pedicure. They all went on to explain how relaxing it is and how pampered they feel getting one. They all hate bending over to do their own toenails and wonder why I still do it.

So, as a result of this onslaught, I decided to scheduled an appt. with what was supposed to be a reputable place. (Does my wording give you a clue as to what I'm leading up to?) The day arrives, I'm looking forward to some pampering. Once in the shop, I'm told to pick out a polish for my pedicure as they fill the whirlpool foot soak. After I made my selection they have me sit in chair that massages my back and neck. The pedicure begins. After my old polish is removed and my nails are trimmed and filed, they have me put my feet in the foot bath. After a lovely soak they begin with the treatment: address the cuticles, massage both feet and legs up to the knee, then a brush is used to smooth my heals, all while the chair is working on my back. OK, this is heaven, I know what my friends are talking about. Why did I wait so long for such pampering?

When this pedicure is grown out I decide to go back for a second one. This time after she takes off my polish, the same technician asks me if I have had a pedicure done elsewhere since my first one with her. I answer no. Nothing more is said, she finishes my pedicure and out I go all happily relaxed with pretty toes once again...

Not realizing that I now have toenail fungus for the first time in my life. But, at this point in time I don't know about it because this pedicure covered it and lasted about a month before I took off the polish to re-do my toenails myself. By this time the fungus has had almost two months to set up house in my nails. I now understand that look on her face when she asked me if I had gone somewhere else. She saw that I had the beginnings of fungus and knew I caught this at her place. She didn't even have the decency to tell me right then and there.

I'm now bending over my toes every night and applying Penlac Nail Lacquer, a topical prescription that my doctor wants me to try, hoping that this will cure me. It will take at least 6 months before we see any real progress or by chance a cure. Maybe, I can have pretty painted toenails for this coming summer. I'm told I have to wait and see. I was also told by my doctor that another woman is being treated for the same thing and that she had her toenails done at the same place. I called the Better Business Bureau to report my experience. I don't know if the other patient did or not. It is the least I could do to protect another person from getting this too. Now, I have to keep all my toes and toenail tools quarantined from my family, plus, I have to scrub the shower after my every use. because this is contagious.

I still can't believe that this stupid thing has happened to me. I use a fingernail brush and antibacterial soap for God's sake, on a daily basis. I'm not the kind of person who grows toenail fungus! Two professional pedicures and I am nailed! Damn. Guess what, no one is immune to this.

My advice to anyone interested in getting a professional manicure or pedicure is to check out the place thoroughly, ask friends for a recommendation and buy your own tools from them to use exclusively on you. (this wasn't offered to me)

OK, My rant is finished. I hope it helps you make a better choice than I made.
